New Member tempted by a 240Z

Hi,

Just joined - I've been tempted by a 240z for several years as a replacement for my factory v8 MGB GT (aconite/autumn leaf) that I've had for nearly 10 years, and fancy a change... The 'Z is where my mind is at...

I've ordered the Newlyn book, and started trawling the site for information, I've seen this car for sale - https://www.fairmontsportsandclassi...datsun-240z-for-sale-in-brentwood-essex-u798/ it's a long way from me up in Cumbria, expensive - but it's my perfect colour combination. Does anyone know it, or have any thoughts... it woudl be appreciated..

I'm happy to and enjoy spannering and have done most of the maintenance/refresh jobs on my MGB over my ownership - but bodywork is beyond me, and rent space in a classic storage - so a full self rebuild would be a challenge..

Thanks,

Simon.

I absolutely adore the V8 version. I was living in Abingdon at the time these were built (and when the factory closed) - such a sad time for the town. Even the rubber bumper versions look good to me now. There was a guy round the corner with a white V8 - reg was 1 YMU. The right car at the wrong time of course but hey, 2591 buyers can’t be faulted.

It's a shame that the B never had a decent 6 cylinder engine. The C engine is very heavy and the V8 a big engine for the intended audience.
The TR7 was similar, it should have had the 'Sprint' engine from the start.
Parts for the Datsun will be harder to source than the B.

A lot harder - I restored my Roadster in 1982-83 and 99% of the parts were off the shelf … car was only 11 years old and rotten as a pear.

Thanks all, for the welcome and responses....
my time with the B has probably spoilt me over parts availability.. any number of places for just about any part... Though as for pricey parts I'm well used to it with my s2000 and Alfa 916 GTV, so as long as it's in that ballpark all is good...

My plan is to buy as best as I can, not concours but well sorted and do around 2000 miles a year.. I'm interested in the green car, having read the thread, I understand there is an issue with the history of the car and lack of info as to how/who did the RHD conversion, both of which will/may affect value. The big question is - is the car itself solid, and rebuilt to a good standard. Looking at eBay, car & classic etc, there are other cars in that price ballpark, some lhd yet to be converted.. However the car was there before last September and it still hasn't sold, that's raising queries in my mind..

It's a learning exercise and any help is appreciated...

What would stand out to me is that the last few 'owners' have just been trying to sell it. This means any repairs / restoration have likely been carried out on the cheap. It's not been cared for by a long-term owner.

Love my wife’s S2000, had it and Z out at weekend. Also got an Alfa so it would seem we have a similar taste in cars 😂
The green car was up for sale at a dealer near me for many months before going to its latest dealer/owner. Personally I’d stay clear and buy from a forum seller.

Yes I saw it briefly whilst at the previous dealership. Definitely looked good at a quick glance, defo LHD converted …. But coolant dripping onto the nice clean storage floor did beg the question if attention had been paid to the details

How much are you after for your BV8?
It's a 3 owner 79k original miles factory chrome bumper car. I've tried to keep it as stock as possible. *Hoping* for above £20k, will be putting it through an MOT in a week or so and it's due a service which I was going to do before listing it.

Thanks, that's the sort of thing that I was looking for, it's a long trip to Brentford from Cumbria. Beauty is both in the eye of the beholder and can be skin deep...

How about this one? One of my cars.

240Z I am selling is a nice sorted car and well worthy of consideration.
Swapping the BV8 into any deal is a possibility if any interest.

ps. What Alfa do you have Kieron? I've also got a 916 GTV in the stable and just about to add a mint low mileage 1985 33.

I've just made the leap. Went for a 260 in the end. Do it! Just be prepared to fluctuate your budget if you want a reasonable turn key car. Lots of fantastic advice on here tho. And as an added bonus, the smile-o-meter goes way up when you are out and about! There's a 240 near me in Oxfordshire that looks good, but has had some welding. had a chat to the guy and he has owned it for 25 years and was restored around 2008.

I’ve got (ok it’s the wife's daily vs my Skoda Fabia vRS 🥴) Stelvio QV with a remap so just under 600BHP. We’ve had it 3 years, longer than any other car, it’s a complete beast and great daily car with exception of 20mpg!. With AWD it can take most super cars with 0-60 c4 secs
