Looking for an S14 gearbox.

Probably a typo Rob - my 3.9 R200 was a whisker under 30kg incl packaging for shipping.

Many years ago I weighed an R180 and a R200 and yes the bigger diff is significantly heavier but by about 6.5kg.

You'd have to ask any owners that - I don't even know how many bespoke cars they've sold so far.

I see photos of the :

pale green Z
blue Z
Samuri Z
Orange Z
ZG kitted Z

and those classic versions (white Z and green Z) sold before the NEC.
Sorry, thought you were suggesting the use of r180s on MZRs was evidence that r200s are unnecessary on performance s30s. :confused

Does anyone know if the old bellhousing from these gearboxes have any value or are they just thrown away?
I sold the one I took off the 14a box on eBay. Might’ve been about 40 quid. The 14 and 14a ones have value because they allow 13 gearboxes to be used with SR20DETs. Useful if installing an SR20 into an S13 car (which people do), or putting an S13 box into an S14 car.
S13 bellhousings probably only have scrap value.

Good to know Richie - I was wondering the same with my 14a bell.

Richie, I think there are a few more differences than you think ranging from the S13 to the S14a box. In the search for syncros for my S14a, I spent a long time getting various VIN numbers and registrations for various S14a years and Nissan/Glyn Hopkin came up with 4 different part diagrams for the years 1996 -2000. All with small subtle differences. And this is only for the Euro box. And that doesn’t include the syncros/baulk rings which definitely differ.

Since things generally develop and evolve for the better, I would think that the latest box (S14a) is the best to have. At least the SXOC seem to agree.

Yeah, 14a is "best", but the question is how long is the difference worth waiting for and how much more should you pay for it?
IMO, not very long and not very much, unless you've got so much torque you need the marginal extra strength of the "best" box.

Not the same I know, but the gearboxes are continuously revised in the 350Z and 370Z too. It seems some things never change / always change.

What Jon said. I’m not arguing that the S14a box isn’t the best to have. Clearly, incremental improvements had been made since the S13 version, the oiling being the key one, and those boxes will, in some cases, have fewer miles on them. Superseded part numbers isn’t necessarily going to translate to significant practical change though - certainly not enough to make it worth passing on a decent S13 or 14 box to hunt down a 14a. Particularly for Z use, as in most cases the difference will be imperceptible and irrelevant to the driver of an occasional use, L-series NA road car.

I will happily donate to your chosen local charity should you donate me your unwanted S13 boxes:D

Some of us have 4 pots that use s13's boxes...

I have two unwanted S13 boxes.

Agree, maybe not the 'best' but what is the obsession with the 'best' : best head type to have, best carbs, best wheels - it's all subjective and mostly unnecessary. And then....do you fit a quick-shift kit or not ? Is that 'best' ?

That's Nissan who introduce upgrades/changes when they appear and don't wait for the end of the year for ex Look at all the S30 differences.....

How did you get on with the rebuild, did you find the correct parts in the end?

Hi Woody, full rebuild is underway, will message you next week with an update!

Mick R, all the syncros are available for the S14a box.

Got one. found an S13 gearbox on ebay apparently without whines or crunches.
Considering Im not planning on changing from the stock <150hp, it
I have the winter now to get it refurbished and bellhousing, mounting bracket and prop shaft modified.
Looking forward to crisper gear changes.
I will see what the setup feels like before I pop on a short shifter.
