L26 Engine

I have a 240 with a 260 engine with a stage 1 cam (allegedly), what does that make my car?. With the condition I'm finding it in and some of the bodges applied it would not surprise me to have 38s instead of 46s.

I'd say it would be very unlikely that you'd have a pair of HJG38Ws on the engine. They were only fitted to 2 litre L-series engined Zs for the Japanese market, so neither your '240' nor the '260' engine would have been fitted with them ex-factory.

Rather than being about 4 or 6 cylinder, it's to do with cylinder capacity.

Stock carburettors on your L20A were Hitachi HJG38Ws. They have 29mm pistons, as opposed to 34mm in the HJG46Ws as fitted to L24s.

I'm afraid they are not really going to be suitable for an L26 (or L28) without major work.

Thanks again. It looks like I am going to have to get the flat-tops working that are coming with the engine. Shame cos I prefer the dome top SUs but I will have to keep my eyes open for a pair for sale.

Out of curiosity and not knowing an awful lot about these carbs, what would happen if the smaller ones were fitted to an L26 engine. I presume performance suffers but by how much and would it damage anything in the engine?

Presuming you could get the fuelling anywhere near where it would need to be for 30% larger cylinder capacity, you'd have quite an asthmatic effect from the restriction in total airflow at higher revs.

I think it could probably be made to work, but it would be a long way from being optimal.

I think the difference would be clear if you looked at the head-mounting faces of the two inlet manifolds. The inlet manifold for the 38s has significantly smaller passages than that for the 46s.

Picked up the engine today. Got it for £265 in the end with everything attached. It looks tatty but there is no major rust or anything to worry about. It will look ok from the outside when it is re-painted later on.

Turns over by hand fine with good compression and it looks as though it had a reasonably new clutch assembly fitted. Unfortunately, it does have flat-top carbs which are in pretty poor condition so they will definitely need swapping. Does anyone have any round-tops from a 240Z that they would be prepared to sell?

Haven't had chance to have a good look at it yet i.e. the internals to see what sort of rebuild work if any needs doing. Problem I have is getting it out of the trailer with no engine hoist.

I am going to need an engine stand but not sure of the weight to make sure I get the right one. I have nothing that I can weigh it with so does anyone know what a block & head would weigh roughly? Was looking at a 570kg stand but not sure if that would be enough. Any help would be appreciated.

A built up engine with everything on doesn't weigh more than maybe 250 kg.

If your going to strip the engine down why not do it in the trailer. Then just get someone to help you lift the block in and onto the stand.

Once built up you will need some sort of hoist to get it off the stand and into the car.

As for the engine stand I would go for something which can easily cope. When I rebuilt my 2.4 I borrowed a mates and its capacity was only just capable. I used it to stip the engine down but gave it back and got a bigger one for the rebuild. I'm kind of risk averse in most respects, but will jump of a bridge with a bungee attached to my legs, go figure lol.

Hi Paul

I have an engine stand you can borrow. Used it for my L28 work and it hung on it for many years.......

Let me know

OMG, you must have arms like Popeye!

Are the SUs the flat top type or the bottle tops? If the latter, are they in reasonable condition & what would you want for them? PM me with details & pics if you have them please.

Thanks

Paul

I've moved a few engines around on my own lately. Dragging them up and down a plank, as Rob said, is my usual method. Get a good footing though as if it starts to fall, you will struggle to stop it.

Engine crane is the best bet and you will need one in the end.

Thanks for the pics. Yeah, unfortunately they are the flat tops which I already have although they are in better condition.

I was really after the round top SUs which look a bit like half a bottle. Thanks again for posting them up but I will hold out a bit longer for the ones I want.

2+2 rear glass in the garage you say?

I don't suppose the element still works does it by chance?

Mine is in good condition but the element isn't. I don't normally drive it in the damp but would be nice to put a good one back in as the glass is out at the moment
