its finally happened........... 240z (Moderated)

They're just a more complex shape than floors etc. I guess thats why they cost more?

Is this what Alan has got for sale?

Possibly, its just not a company I have dealt with, so just looking for opinions and if there is a panel out there.

Yes it is (well not quite.... he would prefer to keep and I can understand why, but has offered it if I really needed it), I have already PMd him asking for a price

Have you tried putting a wanted add on Hybrid Z ?
Always Z's being broken up on there and the prices over there seem to be for nothing at times

Sure some might knock it but tbh if I hadn't I would have never found 2 doors and a body section cut to rustore my 260z
Sure the shipping might not be cheap, but if you can't find it you'll never know

If it's any consolation I ordered £120 of plastic from the good old US of A last night.

Hi Graham
Firstly good luck with your car, I love to read peoples progress with their Z restorations, particularly those people who have a go themselves especially if it's "not their trade" and it's good to see you are tackling the issues you have found and not going down the filler and fibre glass route that has historically ruined many Z's over the years.
I have a new full Radiator Panel that i imported from the states when I came across one, didn't need it but realized that if I (or more likely my sons) ever pranged the front of my Z I may need one. For me the part is priceless and I'll never sell it regardless of what I'm offered. Personally I have never measured the cost of what my restoration is costing and I don't care how long it takes. I'll never sell the car as I'll leave to my sons, so it's value and what I've spent on it is immaterial. I'll have spent years building it, a lot of the time with my sons working on it, so again it's value is immaterial. I've become somewhat anal and meticulous about my Z, it's not how many others would choose to do there car and others may scoff at my attitude, but that's fine, no doubt the same people are the ones who are first to offer help and advice from their knowledge and experience and I'll be grateful to them. My advice (for what it's worth, as I am neither an expert or particularly experienced with Z's) unless your hoping to produce a concourse car, or as near to original as possible, I'd ask your bodyshop if they can cut out the offending metal work and replace with new. I've seen some of the radiator panels that some have created on the net and it's amazing what they have achieved. It'll save you a lot of money and time trying to source that elusive panel. Alternatively you could have one cut from a breakers in the states. I know you are reluctant to take the risk buying internationally but I can honestly say I've never been stung doing this and I have imported hundreds of Z items from Canada, Australia and the USA over the last 15 years, even before the introduction of Paypal, at a time when I had to trot off to the Post Office and get US$'s in cash and blindly send them off to an unknown stranger in the states or where ever. Maybe I was just lucky (and desperate) but I've always found that everywhere in life there are rogues and scammers but there are alot more decent, honorable trustworthy people who just want to help and maybe make an honest living at the same time. Regardless of how you take advice from my ramble, please remember - your time, your money, your Z enjoy it and keep the updates coming :)

Thanks.... I have managed to source one from Fourways, expensive, but hopefully worth it.

Anyways, the car has now been stripped and is ready for blasting.............. now I am nervous!

What's good to see in those pics is how clean the rear end looks that was hidden behind that body kit bumper. It could've been all kinds of nasty in there (!) but instead looks relatively okay.

Good luck with the blasting! When is that being done?

Good luck! When will you get to see the results?

The plan is to get it over to the blasting place today and then they progress next week .... so I am hoping for late next week, but not sure how busy they are.

Oddly, had no issue with the car in pieces and seeing the rust, this however is scary as hell!!!

Very good point.... there is a patch panel above the exhaust, but already knew about that....

I agree.

When I look at a stripped S30 I always think what a poor (weak) bit of design the rear slam panel was.

I noticed something a bit ropey had been done at the exhaust cut-out, but the rest of the valance looks pretty good.

There's still time to chicken out of the blasting! :p Sometimes what we cannot see is best left unseen!

What media is going to be used do you know?

needs to be done, want to get all the sills and doors sorted

soda blasting

I did consider dipping it, but I dont like the idea of acid in the hard to reach pockets of the car, not to mention all the potential issues if the acid is not cleaned off properly or the epoxy is done correctly.

Graham just one question, why have you not removed the polished SS gutter trims? They should be easy to remove and just clip on.

Ok something else I just noticed, will the soda blasting remove the soundproofing on the rear deck? I removed mine and found it had been applied in the factory to bare metal. Most of the surface looked brand new once remover but there were locations where rust had set it under the sound proofing, just something you might want to consider.

Soda blasting is extremely gentle. It will not remove the factory sound deadening (it doesn't even remove heavier rust).

I'm guessing you must be scraping it off first? On my car thats where it had a few pin holes/thin metal(on the floor area though). As Mike says, its put on bare metal so any trapped moisture eventually causes issues.

Good point on the chrome bits, will check - thanks

As for the sound deadening, I can only see it on the floorpans, been through some of the older pictures as well. Floorpans are being replaced, I just need to go and collect the new ones
