Best way to refurb sump pan?

And that is one

Ok ๐Ÿ˜Š you could clamp it with a couple of bits of wood and a pair of mole grips and bend it into a better shape.

Worth a shot! Thanks Jon.

Earlier I tried putting 2 bits of wood in a vice and clamping the lip between those, and using the weight of the sump to bend it. But as I was pushing it, the vice started to tear the top off my makeshift workbench (an old chest of drawers). I really haven't got the gear for this ๐Ÿ˜‚

I love the idea that you're just using makeshift 'whatever you can get your hands on' to sort the car out ๐Ÿ˜‚

Kinda inspiring as, tool makers would probably do the same thing until they had something superior/suitable.

Toolmakers, and apes ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'm not blessed with a lot of experience, space or tools, so there's a lot of make do and give it a try scenarios in my garage. Not always successful!

Also the metal strip needs to face towards the crankshaft. If one is the other way around, that's your issue.

I was wondering that, that's why I mentioned it. Is that true even of the original nissan ones? As it looks like more of a circular pin, maybe built into the seal itself. Compared to the strip shaped one in the new kit.

I've ordered a slide hammer so will try and get it out tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

Nissan oe is a one piece design with integrated metal strip, orientation doesn't matter. Aftermarket ones are with a separate metal strip and will leak eventually (in my experience).

Hmm. Torqen say the pieces I bought are Nissan OE. But they didn't come in nissan branded bags now I think of it ๐Ÿค”

So I'll put RTV in the channel and then press the seal into it, and then the strip?

In this video the guy says you use a long bolt "from the front cover" in the centre and end caps, to give leverage for pulling them out. But which bolts is he referring to? I've pulled one from the front cover, on the thermostat side, and it looks like the one in his video but it won't fit in the thread of either cap.

I've also tried a random M8 in the thread on the end main cap and it doesn't fit. M6 is too small. The valve cover bolts are long but all M6.

I've definitely used m8 bolts in that centre thread on the end cap. Maybe your random one is the wrong thread? Or maybe the thread just needs chasing with a tap.

Yeah could be that. I've tried several M8 bolts now and neither want to go in. I'll try a tap.

Don't even bother using the two piece design seal. Not worth the effort ๐Ÿ˜‰

Nissan oe is still available at the dealership.

Got first bearing shell out (cylinder 6). Looks quite worn, and badly scored on the 2 edges doesn't it :(

I can certainly feel them with my nail. The middle is nice and smooth.. just those lines on the sides.

First big end bearing out. Seems more evenly scored across the face, but they're not as deep as the 2 lines on the first bearing.

Thats the problem with looking ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
The more important thing is whether there's any scoring on the journals. What do they look like?

Looks like I need new bearings. Fuckety fuck. At least the crank looks and feels smooth!

I was planning an engine rebuild in the future anyway.. just looking like a more expensive one than I'd hoped now ๐Ÿ˜ญ
