wiper motor problems

I have just bought myself a 1973 240Z. Horray!!
Problem is two days after I got it the windscreen wipers became intermittent and eventually died. The ammeter shows a little flicker when the switch is turned on and I can hear the relay click under the dash, so I guess its getting power. Anyone have any ideas or know where I can get a replacement motor?

PS. Also need a set of bumpers as mine have been welded into one and painted bright red!!

Hi hobnob,

I to recently purchased a 1972 204z but my windscreen wipers didnt work from word go.

It would be worth stripping out the motor as it could be as simple as the brushes sticking or eaven may need replacing.

Now for the real problem. If your car is not fitted with intermittent wipe then replacing the motor is going to be a bit on the hard side as they are quite rare. But someone in the club might have a second hand one.

If you do have intermittent wipe im still not sure if you can get a new one but getting a second hand one will be alot easier. Rob Hughes runs a second hand part list so you might want to give him a try.

One other point when removing the motor pay attention to how the wiper mechanism is attached, I managed to connect it wrong and the wipers went down instead of up. :D

Hope this helps

If no-one in the UK can help I know Charlie at zeddfindings in Canada has been 'stockpiling' wiper motors for a little while as it has been known that they could be a problem to find/repair in the future.

As far as I know LHD and RHD ones are the same so hopefully getting one from A LHD country won't be a problem ( unless anyone else knows different :) )

Hope it helps

Mine is the later motor with intermittent switching. I must admit I havn't checket the motor brushes yet, but if they need replacing are they readily available? I have contacted pmac who has some 260z motors, but they have a different plug, and trying to match up six wires could be difficult.
Regarding the bumpers, I didn't think new ones would be available, but I see you are based in Canada so maybe they are more readily available over there. Do you know what the cost would be for shipping such an item, and the difference in price between new and second hand?

Thanks for your replies

Geoff
