Warm Up Time 280ZX engine

How long does it take for the engine to reach operating temperature after starting it from cold and leaving it to idle?

I left it on idle for about 20 minutes and the temp gauge in the car hardly moved and the lower rad pipe was not very hot either. I had the heaters on hot and they were blowing cold air, and usually the heaters can get very hot.

Is this normal??

I didnt persist to see if it changed as it started to rain.

When I drive the car the needle on the temp gauge normally settles in the centre.

Thanks

put a new stat in it, its probably siezed open. 20 mins it should be like toast inside.

Hmmm...I put the stat in boiling water and it opened about a hairs width, should it open more?

Gotta agree with you Grolls,,,classic stuk stat ! But , even after 20 mins should be blowin some heat? at idle with no ambient airflow,,,,water pump issue maybe??

The stat should open about 1/4 - 3/8 " and it should not take more than half a min to do so when plopped into poached egg water !:D

yes, should open right up, if your going to put it in boiling water you need to know the temperature of the water or you achieve nothing, for the price of a stat, just get mike to post you one as the stat may have stuck and when you removed it , it freed off!

:S30: with ref to the temp on the gauge sillywally. if the water is not flowing the engine can be hot in places and not in others so the gauge may not read temp correctly but the heater will still blow cold. if the stat wasnt open there should be some warmth from heater because it is not controled from the stat it should have its own flow if pump is working well

I thought the stat was stuck open ? Now I'm "slightlyconfusedwally" What I meant in the previous post was that if the stat was stuck open, then even after idle for 20 mins the heater should be blowing warm air. BUT the temp gauge should by rights be showing a warm reading as well. Cheers, Wally.
P.S. Who's on first? No whats on second. etc. :D
