Voltage warning

Running my car to work and back to get some confidence miles before doing the 600 mile trip its going to take me to get to Billing my voltage gauge on the dash has crept into the 16v range. The charge light flicks on and off at high speed. All the time I've run it the gauge has read around 14v but the warning only came on today. Is this bound to be a voltage regulator problem or a fault on the alternator? Can I run the car or will it toast the battery? I need some advice please only one day until I set off.

Sounds like a regulator problem to me.Put a voltmeter accross the battery and see what comes out, if its over 14.5 you appear to have a regulator problem. I have just done one with a regulator wiring fault and it blew every bulb in the lighting circuit , dash bulbs too, apart from the headlamps. Your regulator is found under the black bracket bolted to the o/s flitch which has the fusible links fitted to it.

I've just removed the voltage regulator. Stripped it and cleaned the contacts. All seems o.k. Refitted it and checked the voltage at the battery. This read 14.6v. Everything is now o.k. and the volt meter on the dash now reads 14/15v. I've also found a new spare voltage regulator from an Isuzu forklift which is identical to the one fitted. I'm just a bit jumpy about the long journey. The car has only done 350 miles in 14 years and only 280 have been trouble free.

Hi, John. Hope you have a good run to Billing. I have found that, the longer a car sit,s around the more problem,s you are faced with . My current Z, sit,s around and is only driven occasionally compared to previous one,s and thing,s like engine core plug,s, have gone. I think bad connection,s,earthing, etc.are common in creating problem,s and advise cleaning connecter pin,s( especially Hidden one,s) any spraying elec-switch cleaner or WD40 on them. Also stop whenever possible en-route, and have a quick spot check as 600 miles is a lot of miles, I,d be at wit,s- end doing that kind of milage.........good luck...DJZ 60.

Thanks for the advice. The car drives very well and feels solid and reliable. I've packed spare alternator, distributor, hose, plugs, voltage regulator etc and lots of tools. But it is the unknown. After sorting the flat top carbs and dirty fuel problems it has been fine. I've got to go 200 miles to Wales and 260 across to Billing and back then 200 miles back home all in three days. It could be the basis for zed the road movie!!

Billing commitee Should give you a prize, alone, for all that endurance.I would also like to think that if anyone passes one of "our"lot in a crisis, that they would stop and lend a hand.On the whole I think you seem to be well prepared for this expedition.........I got stuck in very heavy traffic situation last year and was pleased When I got through without mishap!..DJZ 60.

I have a chase car lined up as well. My father in law will be traveling close at the end of phone in his Discovery. I don't seem to be planning for sucess here do I? I 'll probably win a prize for trip to Billing by the most complicated route or using the most motorways.
