Can someone please tell me what the last six digits on the vehicle identification number mean? Is there a web site or database to access this information to find an exact date the car was manufactured? I noticed that the Datsunzclub.com http://datsunzclub.com/serialnumber.html have the vin numbers listed with a complete break down of year and model etc... is there an equivalent website for the UK cars.

Chassis (VIN) numbers are issued in numerical order by Datsun / Nissan for each model code. However, the records for 240Z, 260Z and 260Z 2+2 are in broad bands with some anomalies:
240Z - Model code HS30:
00003 - 00500 Oct 1969 - May 1971
00501 - 01500 Jan 1971 - Aug 1971
01501 - 14000 Sept 1971 - Jun 1972
14001 - 101537 July 1972 - July 1973
At some point during this latter period there is a start to VIN numbers jumping to 100000+. More recent information from a Japanese source states the VIN 100001 relates approximately to a build date of October 1972.
For the purposes of current legislation concerning Historic Vehicle tax exempt status, the accepted cut off VIN for end of December 1972 is 100800 - anything higher than this will NOT be tax exempt under the current ruling.
Also, I have seen VIN numbers in excess of 101537, so the records are further confused by this!
260Z 2str - Model code RS30
260Z 2+2 - Model code GRS30
000001 - 005000 Aug 1973 - Aug 1974
005001 - 010000 Sept 1974 - July 1975
010001 - 015000 Aug 1975 - July 1976
015001 - 021000 Aug 1976 - Aug 1977
For RS30:
021001 - 021384 Sept 1977 - June 1978
For GRS30:
021001 - 021767 Sept 1977 - June 1978
The 280ZX (1978 - 1983) has model codes HS130 (2 str) and HGS130 (2+2). The VIN number records are traceable to the month from June 1978 onwards.
The 300ZX Z31 (1984 - 1989) has model code HGZ31 (U.K. cars) and month by month records.
The 300ZX Z32 (1990 - 1994) has model code RGZ32 (U.K. cars) and month by month records.
Import 300ZX models have a different set of model codes and VIN numbers.
If anyone wants to accurately place the build date of 280ZX and onwards models, they are welcome to call me on 01277 374201 and I can do this for them.
