Uk register without any documents

So if you bring a car in ‘for parts only’ - which presumably comes without a title, what tax is payable - import duty, VAT etc?

Many thanks for all the great help and advise been offererd, it has been a massive help in understanding the process better. Following from this I have since spoken again to the seller, who has been able to pass on the details of the importer who brought the car over from California (as a complete car some years ago) and dealt with NOVA then. But I'll also now phone them directly, as probably just quicker to get a copy, now I know about this as an option. Will update further once I know more.

I have had the NOVA confirmed today, been told I can apply for registration with my chassis number. So will crack on now with re-building the car back up to standard spec, plus engine and box, to get registered. Still long way to go, but feels better knowing there is a plan now.
My own experience has been that there's no problem with not having US title docs as long as you have the Nova and a dating letter. But: they wouldn't register mine while it is in bits (even though I showed their engineer all the original bits).
So it sounds like the way forward might be:
1) get the NOVA. No hope without it.
2) complete the build of the car with minimum mods (maybe just the rb engine and 350z box)
3) get a dating letter
4) get the registration
5) add further mods.

Does that sound right everyone?
