Thermal and acoustic? All in one you mean? Where do you intend on using it on the bulkhead or something?

If you just want acoustic insulation (do your floor and doors and bulkhead and boot and well everywhere ) try www.maplin.co.uk or www.caraudiodirect.co.uk and look for 'brown bread', for noise/£ ratio it seems to be about the best. Worth shopping around a little for it tho. Other than that you can use roofing bitumen (cheap&#33 or aluminium roof flashing (v expensive! you may just as well buy Dynamat). The best cheap option is Marley sealant tape or it's sold under another name something like Aqua tape. It's basically bitumen with aluminium on one side and very sticky stuff on the other. Probably do your whole car for £50.

If your gonna do acoustic deadening let me know and I'll write you a guide.

Cheers

What is wroong with just using some nice new carpets and some proper hessian/jute type underlay??? I have seen a car plastered in dynamat. What a mess! Zeds are supposed to be a little noisy anyway. What do you want to do in it? Drive it or sleep in it?

For a start what do you want? Noisey car or a car that you don't get bored of the road noise, tyre noise, wind noise which allows you to hear the engine better

I'm not sure how 'cars covered in dynamat' are a mess, it goes under the carpets, behind the door cards, behind the roof lining.

It also improves the cars acoustics so those who appreciate car audio get a better sound, no different than if I stuck my hifi in a room with hard floor and bare walls it would also sound crap. Also helps keep the noise in

Stops your car bloody rattling, nothing more annoying than a persistent rattle.

It's also lighter and thinner than the fibre type matting.

I'm not suggesting you turn your car into a recording studio, the sound proofing alone would weigh a ton! But manufacturers have a budget to work to and sound deadening doesn't come too high up the list. All I want to hear in my cars is the breeze through the window, my stereo, talk to my friend(s) and hear the engine. Until I can afford a Bentley or Roller I'll sound deaden every car I own. Once you've deaden the road noise and don't have to shout to the passenger you won't want to go back.

Just my 2p.

Plus it gives your door a more expensive and nicer sounding thud when you close it

Hi,
When I fitted big bore de-catted exhaust pipes to my Z32 NA, the exhaust noise was lovely on acceleration, but when steady cruising, could be a pain...literally!
I lifted the rear seats and fitted thick carpet felt to the underneath area, including the tunnel and rear boot floor.
This did make quite a difference to the sound levels from the rear of the car.It didn't cut down on the noise from the vibrating propshaft though!

Thanks for the info Russ - very helpful. The main areas that I was looking at was to take out the road noise from around the drive shaft housing, floor pans and to get that expensive sounding clunk when shutting the door. As for Pmac, why did you have to mention sleeping in the car? my wife loves the idea and now i've got to fix the heating and get double glazed windows, do you know who does that? .
Personally I prefer to listen to a good cd and a GDS exhaust.
