Sagging seat belts

Hi all,

My seat belts are a bit saggy and reluctant to retract. I had heard from various 300 people there was a part you could grease and they'd be alright again.

Anyway no such luck :) I've had them out and apart and learnt all about how they work, and I've come to the conclusion the coiled spring in the reel part is just tired, and I need new ones. I tried winding the spring up a bit more before putting it back together and that didn't help either.

I've never seen any 300zx ones for sale, no doubt like everything for the 300 in this country they'll be too much £. I was wondering if another Nissan would have the same belts? I only really need the reel part on the side, the rest is good. I looked on the net and I *think* the Z31 may have the same belts?

They are made by NSK Ltd, so maybe that'll be a lead.

Have attached a couple of pics.

Hi,
Are your belts on the doors or pillars?....On the early cars with belts on the doors you can disconnect the electrical connection in the door and this will stop the belts becoming slack,as they were designed to be passive rather than tight.

Hi,

No sorry forgot to mention mine are on the B pillar :)

Mine stay nice and taught whilst driving, just fail to retract properly like a new car.

Cheers

I have to sometimes fed mine back by hand as well. They still of course pass the mot as they work perfectly the other way.

If you've already tried adjusting then you'll either have to fed them back by hand or replace the mechanism

Oh Jap spec Z32's are always on the door unless someone has had them changed all Uk spec are in the usual place

Yeah I've given up, looking to replace the whole thing or if I can just the coiling part, i.e. nick that from a different model.

JDM seat belt positions changed in the same model year as all the other markets surely? :) Tis a shame they still have such chunky pillars on the doors that the glass runs in though, one day if I can find a way I'll redesign it all to remove that and have a longer window.

Series 2 and newer j-Spec cars have the seatbelt on the pillar and not the doors. Sagging seatbelts are a common problem on z32's. Just a case of finding a replacement from a breaker.
