Have a 1996 SL320 which is pretty reliable - I believe the SL500 etc go cheap because of the fuel consumption !!
However with your Dad's low mileage may not be a major concern - not really designed for racing but more a grand tourer a bit like my XJS many years ago

Hello Mate

Had the car about 2 years and the only issue I had was that I had an oil leak after 2 months. This was around 87,000 miles - Did a google and this model is apparently renowned for it. It wasn't the head gasket but the secondary gasket in front and above the head. anyway with a bit of gentle persuasion the garage (small dealer) fixed it for me claiming about 4 hrs spent on the car by a merc technician.

Nice car (automatic) to drive and does 35mpg at 80MPH -
