looking into buying a z32

MAX 2NR

New Forum User
hey

im the owner of a 02 Maxima se but i was looking into getting a 90' fairlady z (300zx) its a leather, 2 seater, twin turbo with supposedly 67000kms. the car was imported from japan and brought to canada. the car was pained white (used to be yellow) the spoiler is warped, no rust that i can see, the steering wheel and pedals are not that worn but the leather driver seat is worn down so bad that the seat is torn. thats why i have a hard time believing the car jus 67000kms. so those of you who are the original owners of your cars, how many kms until your leather started to tear? what kind of things should i look at before buying the car? what are some of the problems areas of 300zx's? any help is greatly appretiated. btw, the engine ran great!

Would depend on the price...you can get superb motors for about £4k which by the sounds of things are in far better nick than the one you're looking at...Electric leather seats cost a fortune (thank god mine are in top condition!!!) Go onto the 300zx owners website www.300zx.co.uk and have a look on there..You can prob guarantee theirs have been looked after and had the probs sorted out first.
Owning one will be fun, will cost a lot in fuel cos you'll be driving it so much (18mpg is good)
Make sure you buy a black one cos Red ones aren't that quick either!!!!

God !!! I wish people would fill in their location - even more important if you're not even in the same country !!

Just look for the evidence before you hit the keys!!
Hes got an 02 Maxima!!! Yeh like loads of these here!
The car hes looked at was "imported into Canada"!
What more do you need????

Ok, fair point - I didn't see the Cananda bit (sorry)

As for 02 Maxima.......well, I'm not THAT into Nissan's.

Hi,

in general all 300zx/fairlady's imported from japan have worn driver seats and between 40,000 and 70,000km's!! But dont let that worry you, as the seat normally gets wear from the drivers (especially if their large!) jumping into their seats in excitement :) . as for the steering wheel, and basic wear and tear, sometimes bits are swapped around on different cars either on the boat over or when they are left in dry dock awaiting distribution (i have seen this first hand).
so there is no way of knowing unless you privately import one from a dealer.

I advise look around, there are nice 300,s out there no matter what part of the world you are in, and if you buy one and have to spend some money on it, so what, i firmly believe the Z32 is the best value for money in looks, performance and equipment for a 1990's supercar.;)

there isnt much looking around here. theres only about half a dozen twin turbos for sale in Canada. most of them are probably in better condititon but this one is definetly cheaper. anyone have experiances with cars from japan. how come they all have such low kms? i noticed a lot have torn seats also, but i havent seem any other cars with torn leather at 70,000kms. is it maybe because the car is so low and they get rubbed a lot going in and out?? my old maxima had 180,000kms and the leather wasnt torn.

Well yes the reason seats are worn in the same place is because of driver carelessness (im the biggest offender!). On the mileage, the main reason is because of Japanese Emission laws , but there are also plenty of guys with screwdrivers!
However i could be wrong but i believe an imported clocked 300zx cant have been put back by too much. There's a lot more things to look for. I am only speaking from personal experience , as i am currently driving my third Japanese import and have heard things like "yes the reason those tyres are so worn is because they are the originals that came with the car!" This is quite possible in some cases but come on !.....
My advice? find the best 300Zx in Canada, Buy It , and if they are as rare as you say, you my friend will be spending a lot more time in Filling stations explaining what it is:)

well im going to go look at the car again this weekend and go through everything in the buyers guide. if its in good shape i'll probably put in an offer and see wat happens.

Hi,
Have a look at this link, as it explains some of the reasons for the apparently low mileages on Japanese imports....http://crism.com/market/.
With regard to seat wear, the quality of the leather and cloth isn't particularly good and the years take their toll, even if the overall mileage is low!
I used to have a 1990 Z32 back in 2000/1, imported through Ireland and it looked and drove like a 4 year old car, compared to the equivalent UK version! The Japanese climate had dried the leather seats out a bit, but after some applications of hide moisturiser and some recolouring (shoe polish!), they looked like new!
Cheerz,
JEZ

i dont belive any import milage unless with history because the clocks are taken out to put mph clocks in nobody is that honest not to clock it when you have taken the clocks out i looked at tons of 300's from wales to london to liverpool and saw nothing but rubbish for £5000 to £6000 all said 50000 miles (strange that nearly every import has 50000) with big holes in the seat i have a 94 UK with 90000 miles and the seat is only scuffed do your homework read all forums and you will get a good one (rare)
