right, i'm trying to install my engine & box together.
it bloody well came out ok from the "old" 2+2, but will it go into the 2 seater?
no it bloody well wont.
my datsun bodyshell manual says take out engine & box as one unit, therefore assembly should be the opposite, yes?
the engine manual says install box seperately.
so, which is right?
the only difference on the 2 seater is it has the later rack & pinion steering-this is the sticking point-literally, no matter what angle of dangle i have on the engine & box it wont go in.
it fouls the steering rack.
bearing in mind i have a back problem & dont/cant fancy lifting a box onto the engine-any ideas?
i'm now seriously thinking of going the whole hog & chucking a "mouse" motor in it.
whats a 58 thousand mile motor with a P90 head & Janspeed turbo & all ancilaries worth then?

its not off the floor, but its over a pit, so the box has somewhere to go.
the problem is the cambox fouls on the bulkhead, just after the bottom edge of the box fouls on the rack.
i've tried altering the angle its going in at, but its a bit limited as the lifting lugs are no longer on the motor.

It helps to have the back end of the car up in the air. Also, try removing the rocker cover for a little more clearance. There is no significant difference between 2 seater and 2+2 in this respect, so the exercise should work!

Well if all else fails just chop out the top rad support rail , drop the engine/box in(dead easy now) then weld it back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes its looking more like the rack will come out- i,m going to give it one last go as per mike suggested.
Did i mention i was a mechanically inept feckwit?

Erm, sorry DP, but I've already claimed that title. I open the bonnet and say "what the feck's that dirty great lump of metal in there"

ITS IN!!

put the engine in this afternoon-had to take the box off tho-it got wedged under the rack when the crane rolled its castors into the pit.

only way to free it was to drop the box off.
so, box back in tomorrow time allowing, then head swap & turbo install.

EEK! Sounds like it could have been nasty, hope no damage was done :)

Just like that :) Good luck, sounds interesting, pics?

sounds worse than it was m8, hindsight is a great thing & it would have been easier to move the car outside, turn it around & back it on over the pit-trouble is its been peeing down here for days-i dont want the already fragile body work(in places) exposed to any more rain til it has primer on it.

pics will be posted in my gallery as & when i remember to take the camera to work!
