Heavy Steering On 260z

Hi everyone I own a 260z and love driving the car, but have always thought the only improvement I would like to make to the car would be to add power steering. I know a few owners would dissagree with me but does anyone know of any car that has had power steering fitted, if indeed there is any unit that would fit without to much alteration to the car itself. look forward to hearing your views.

This is a mod which has been done, but I don't have exact details of the parts. The 280ZX power steering pump, reservoir and brackets , plus pulleys will provide the power. You will need to lose the mechanical fuel pump. However the 280ZX rack doesn't work - it is mounted to the rear of the crossmember on the 280 whereas the 240Z/260Z rack is mounted to the front. You could learn to steer in the opposite direction for each turn, but I wouldn't recommend it. You will need a power rack that operates on forward facing knuckles that is approx. the same track as a Z rack. I believe Kevin Irons at Samuri used something from a Rover, but here my detailed knowledge stops............not sure what model.
Pipework could be custom made by a hydraulic pipe manufacturer once you know the exact nature of the end fittings, i.e. ZX at one end, Rover or A.N.Other at the rack end.

Hi Brian J,
You could always use a LHD 280ZX rack ! You wouldn´t have to learn how to steer inthe opposite direction.
I had a similar problem when I bought my 260Z. I rebuilt the steering rack, lower ball joints & filled with a mixture of grease & STP. I think my car is just right. I can easily turn the steering wheel at parking speed & at speed the steering has a wonderful feedback. But if you are used to really light modern steering ......
