Cotter pin size

Does anyone know the size of the cotter pin that holds the wheel bearing lock nut in place? I bought some bearings but didn't get cotter pins with them.

Mike can sell you some nice new ones for about £25 each lol.

I think we are confusing the simple split pin for the front bearing with the ferociously expensive cotter pin on the rear hub lower swivel pin...
A wheel bearing kit should come with a new split pin - diameter 2mm, length 5.5cm - available at good accessory shops. If in trouble I can order Nissan genuine items - not £25...

BTW, I have limited stock of the expensive rear cotters at £6.99 + VAT - came by a small batch at a keen price. When these are gone, they will be £20+ again!

Yeah, I need pins for the front -- but isn't cotter pin another name for a split pin? How much do the Nissan originals cost, I can only find 2x50mm, or maybe that would be long enough?

2 x 50 will do the job!

Ref. Wikipedia:

Cotter pin can mean:

  • In USA usage:
    • A split pin, a metal fastener with two tines that are bent during installation used to fasten metal together, like with a staple or rivet
    • Hairpin cotter pin, more commonly known as an "R-clip"
    • Bowtie cotter pin, a vibration-proof type of R-clip that is shaped like a bowtie
    • Circle cotter, a ring-shaped cotter pin
  • In British usage:
    • A cotter, in mechanical engineering a pin or wedge passing through a hole to fix parts tightly together
Hence the confusion! I try to stick to the British usage - split pin for the type of retainer you need and cotter pin meaning a wedge pin...
