Constant Anti-Lock dash light

Hi guys

I've got a constant anti-lock dash light. Its been up for a few months now and I'm not sure what could be causing it. I've ignored it for a while but now its MOT time again.

I've been told it could be a faulty sensor in the wheels or just a broken wire that could be affecting the ABS. My usual garage cannot trace the fault with their diagnosis kit so they have suggested going back to Nissan for a proper fault diagnosis.
I need to get this fixed so it can pass its MOT. Any idea what might be causing it or is there anything I can check myself?

Its also going through steering rack gaiters every year. Is there a an upgrade for these parts that stand up better to wear and tear?

Thanks

Breaks in sensor wiring, corroded connections in plugs or actual damage to sensores if front hubs have been worked on - wheel bearing replacement for example.

Thanks Mike.

I was told by the garage that they went to the boot to try and trace the fault under a panel there. They couldn't access because of the boot build I installed. Will this be a problem for Nissan do you think? Its not really a problem to remove all the kit anyway so no big issue.

The ABS actuator is housed in the rear - it is possible that your install has blocked easy access!

Hi Mike,

Only just managed to get the car into Nissan today so they could take a look at this fault. They got back to me at the end of the day and asked did the Anti-Lock light come on when you fitted the braided brake lines?
I said no...the light had come on way before that. Then they asked me if the light came on after I fitted new brake discs. Again, same answer, the light was on long before they were fitted.

I hung on the phone for some time after when he went to speak with his mechanic. He eventually came back to me and said that it sounds like the actuator is faulty as it controls the solenoid which closes and releases the disc which makes the ABS possible. It is not releasing at all and new parts are gonna cost me about £1900 not including labour!!!???

I calmly took the keys back from him, collected the car and went home.
Please tell me that there is a cheaper option

The most expensive bit of the car I've needed to have repaired is my gearbox. I could understand the expense as its a big job.

Could a new actuator/solenoid be just as much or more??

Whey hey hold on there! the abs unit has a very good self test that will tell you exactly where the fault is.

The abs unit has an ecu located behind the panel on the drivers side back seat squab, remove the squabrelease the panel and you will see the big silver ecu.

On the ecu there is a red led, drive the car a short distance and WITHOUT swithing the car off count the amount of flashes the led does and compare that to the fault chart and there you are, most common fault is a wheel senor, ulmost unheard of that a main abs unit would fail and if it did a used one would be £60+vat wheel sensors are £20+vat ( both in stock )

A cheap, quick fix...pull the warning light in the

cluster guage. Unless your MOT there actually runs a test on the ABS - how would they not it's not working???

Would be best if you could get it fixed right, but here's one way to get thru inspection...

Good point, and if the MOT tester does not know his cars too well then he will assume it is a non abs brake equiped car and it will not be an issue, however if he knows it is an abs equiped car he WILL look for the abs light test sequence and I expect he could fail it because the light test could not be done.
