Clutch Prob..

I've been reading around another Z forum about this but no definite answer or reply yet, wondering if yous can help.

I'll bullet point this to make it more readable:

1. Clutch slips under harder acceleration especially 5th gear
2. Hard to engage gears at times, especially when cold
3. Brakes seem a little studdery as if there's air in the system
4. Drivers side floor is wet, maybe caused by leaking master
clutch cylinder?
5. Adjusted clutch pedal (3 turns) to prevent slipping but NO
change at all

So my clutch is slipping and would the above symptoms point to the clutch master cylinder leaking and then sucking in air OR both the cylinder and the clutch itself?

Any tips, pointers appreciated!

Clutch slip under high torque conditions would indicate that the friction disc has seen better days, or that there is some pre-engagement of the clutch. Beware when making adjustments that you are not removing pedal free play as this may start to lightly engage the clutch and leave the release bearing in contact with the release fingers. A clutch pre-loaded in this way will cause slippage.

When you say "wet", do you mean water or with brake / clutch fluid? If water, suspect the heater matrix! If brake fluid, check the master cylinders - fluid loss should be apparent from a drop in levels.

Thanks.

The "wet" on the drivers side floor seems to have some colour and a slight smell to it. I've checked the clutch fluid to see if it's the same, it's got the same smell almost but the clutch fluid is brown?(should that be right?). I don't think it's water so i'd say clutch fluid although i've kept an eye on the fluid levels and they don't seem to be dropping any.

Another thing. The last day or two i've noticed a darkish grey smoke in the car, only now and then. I'm 99% sure it's coming from the air vents.

I adjusted the pedal to the point where the free play had disappeared and then i adjusted it back a little. I'll adjust back some more and see if it makes a difference but as you say i probably need a new clutch plate etc..

Hi,
The damp in your footwell could well be due to a failing heater matrix and not linked to your clutch at all.
The liquid will no doubt be discoloured with corrosion and antifreeze!
I had a manual non turbo Z32 car and the gears did crunch if rushed from cold, so it might be a combination of worn clutch and cold gearbox which is causing your gear selection problems.

It does sound like your clutch is going, the slave cyl is a known fault on the zeds. Also it does sound like the heater matrix is going, if it was your master cylinder then you have to top it up every day for it to make the floor wet as it holds so little!
