auto fluid and advice

I want to change the gearbox fluid on my 300zx twin turbo, which would be the best fluid to use or will any dexron fluid be suitable? Is there a filter in the box to be changed ?
It's the wife's car and she said on a couple of occasions the car seems to be revving more and not moving as quick as it should, i'm hoping this is down to manky fluid and not torque converter or gearbox troubles on the horizon.
Advise me please.

If no history of fluid change, then drop the pan and replace the filter inside.
A good quality Dexron or equivalent will do the job. We stock Millers UN for example.
Dexron III was the accepted standard, now superseded by Dexron VI.

Thanks for that, the oil on the dipstick does look very grey rather than pinky red. Would dodgy oil cause the problems she's been having? it has only happened a couple of times.
Bloody worrying though, i couldn't afford gearbox troubles.
Did you say there is a filter in the gearbox? and if so do you stock them?

Grey stinky ATF is always worrying. You'll need a filter and a gasket kit - I can order for you and supply the ATF at the same time if you like.

Often an indication of worn lining materials depositing particles in the oil. Any burnt smell on the dipstick sample?

No not really just smelled like oil, the engine oil was pretty black too so i'm guessing they've not been changed for while(i've not long had the car)

Parts arrived today Mike thanks.
Oil and filter changed and it seems an awful lot better, the next few days will tell.
I do have a slight hesitation problem now:(
I'm going to put a new post up to see if anyone else has had a similar problem.

Hi Glyn,

that was fortunate mate! Sometimes a damn good drain and refil works wonders on the auto box. I was not so lucky with my old red ZX.....

....it ended up losing 2nd and 4th gears. I didn't go for the manual conversion but opted for a full rebuild - still cost over £1200 though!!

Wow! £1200 would be petty painful, £100 for oil and filter was a bit of a bargain i guess unless it's just delaying the inevitable. I hope not.
