2.8 Rebuild - Previously went bang

Well, having had my bearings go on my old engine, I have procured myself a 'new' fully re-con short engine. So this and the next couple of weekends plan is to replace old with new. My DJ head has been fully rebuilt so I'll have to be careful taking it off. I have bought a full set of new gaskets and I'm desperate to get behind the wheel again.

Has anyone got any tips as regards stripping down and then reassembling at this level? The short engine is complete so I'm not playing around with Pistons. I know from experience that juggling the manifolds and gasket is a nightmare!

I know I am going to need an engine hoist (Could always saddle up the Matbro on the farm!). Can you rent these?

Any tips would be most welcome. I've got both the Haynes manual and the rebuilding a Datsun OHC engine manual, a trusty chum to hold the spanners and a big pot of tea!

The How to Rebuild your Datsun OHC book will be of great help.

"SOME" things to remember:

- Firstly remove the two front bolts on the outside of the cylinder head, which connect to the timing cover.
- Undo the head bolts in sequence, in reverse order of the tightening order.
- Put tissue paper in the cylinder holes to ensure no dirt falls inside them.
- Find the correct size tap and tap the head bolt holes.
- Clean the head and block surfaces thoroughly, use a stanley knife blade at a 45degree angle or less to slice off all the old gasket, but ensure you do not gouge or deeply scratch the head or the block. (Be very careful!)
-Now remove your tissue paper carefully so as not to let any dirt fall into the cylinder holes, use a vacuum cleaner to remove any bits that may have escaped.
- Once your surfaces are ready, clean with brake cleaner to ensure they are spotless, make sure you dont get any brake cleaner on the valve guides (apaprently it eats them).
- With a dial indicator, if you have one, make sure that No.1 Piston is set to TDC.
- Place your new gasket on the head, assuming it's a Nissan one it wont need any sealant, and place your locating dowels (dont forget these!) into their positions on the block.
- Now set your head to TDC, ie degreeing the cam, for a pic of how the sprocket should be positioned Click Here.
- Make sure you tighten the head bolts in sequence.
- Remeber to install a new timing chain kit. For guidance on how the chain should be located, look at this Click Here
- Test fit your timing cover and put the damper on with the timing mark, the timing mark should be at 0 TDC.
- Fit a new crank case seal to the timing cover.
- Fit your damper back on and tighten to torque.

I am not an expert and only have done this the one time, so hopefully others will chip in and hopefully correct anything i have left out or not said correctly. I am grateful to Albrecht who was their to help me!

Above all take your time and as long as you follow the book and do things methodically you will be fine. Above all, have fun!

Take your time and double check everything I also remember that the Haynes Manual torque setting for the Canshaft sprocket is wrong too loose will have to check correct torque with Mr F.
Inlet/ exhaust gasket is Ok to fit just need a good set of spanners and long reach arms..just changed my gasket.. 2hours start to finish.. must be the practice...
