I love the words "straight forward".
Brings back memories of when i did the NA to turbo conversion on my 31 :).

I did the same NA auto to turbo manual, can't imagine an RB conversion much different, I've seen a couple of guys in the states do it and looks easy to be honest, as long as you have the RB gearbox, 200zr sump oh and the RB 25 ecu would be handy or you could go stand alone :)

It will be a lot easier starting with a 200ZR which has the RB20DET engine already factory installed and will supply the 200ZR sump and pick-up in the correct configuration. Pretty much everything should "fall" into place .

I dont want to piss on anyones fire but why would you want an RB20 or even an RB25 powered Z31 when a VG30ET can make more power than you need?

The only reason I can see for owning one is if it was a two seater & you were planing an RB26DETT swap.

Having said that, variety is the spice of life & if it's a Z31 it's cool in my book.

You have a 200ZR because it is (in the UK) a rare version and interesting as a Japanese variant in its own right. It comes with an RB20DET anyway, thus the RB25DET swap is a simple and natural progression. The RB26DETT would be nice (and possible), but quite a bit more expensive to source. For some owners it's not all about horsepower.
The RB25DET comes stock with a little more bhp than a stock VG30T and has similar tuning potential. No one was claiming that the RB series is better than the VG series and I'm happy to admit that some serious bhp can be obtained from the VG (it was, after all, the basis of some excellent Nissan race engines). You'll be hard pressed to show me many UK owners who have gone that route though...

...watch this space, however. I have one customer car heading that way if he ever gets it completed and Frank (Z31turbo) isn't doing too bad for a stock block engine!

I dont think the 200zr is amazingly powerfull in standard form but I think its got potential and I've already got an R32 GTR with enough power to satisfy my hunger for bhp. The zr is a rare car even in Japan and is something different to buzz around in for the summer.
Also being that its an import it has its interesting JDM variations and it has no rust issues which is a bonus.
I've got a C33 Laurel medalist with an RB20 and I was quite impressed with the performance from the 2.0 engine albiet a six cylinder.
Does anyone know if there is any power difference with the RB20 in the 200zr because it looks different to my Laurel lump (And I don't just mean the rocker covers and intercooler):D.

There are far to many hoses/pipes on the 200zr (red top) in comparison to the Laurel (silver top). Its a plumbers nightmare :D

Bit of an update
Since getting the car I've given it a thorough going over and have found no rust, rot or welding!!
I've fitted a replacement 2nd hand exhaust manifold including a new gasket and 12 new manifold studs due to the original being cracked and was blowing badly.
Fitted all new turbo gaskets and new copper washers to oil and water feed pipes.
Its also had a new cambelt and water pump and some new NGK Iridium plugs (grade 6) gapped to 0.8mm.
Fitted some new import style number plates to freshen it up.
All this including a good clean throughout was in preperation for its mot which it passed :D

Current spec:
Full stainless exhaust system
Stainless turbo elbow
Nismo panel filter
New NGK Iridium plugs (grade 6)
ARC uprated top mount intercooler
HKS blow off valve including elbow

Will put some pics up soon
