S30 Chrome Bumpers

I was considering the Stainless bumpers, and getting the holes welded up but was worried that they just won't look as good as chrome.

Stainless steel never has quite the mirror-finish of chrome but they still look very good on the car - you can hardly tell the difference. However, as I said, they do scratch easily.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I was a bit concerned about the scratching (no I don't have fleas either!!), but I am going to bite the bullet and order some. They have to be better than the ones I have and if they scratch that badly, I can always get them chromed up later (hopefully).

They should arrive in a few weeks just in time for getting my car back from the paint shop after the respray. I will send some pics when they are all fitted up.

Cheers:cheers:

If you didn't order any i have some originals i was selling with over riders.....

Thanks Monsween. Shame, if it was a few days earlier I would have considered them if they were definitely for a 2+2. Anyway, I have ordered the stainless steel ones now.

Stick them on the classifieds or Ebay. Someone will have them no doubt!

Cheers

Update:

Stainless steel bumpers now fitted and they look fabulous . They arrived really quickly and with no additional nonsense from HM Customs. There were no additional unneeded holes in mine which, given some previous posts I was expecting so at least I don't have to worry about covering them.

The bolt positions for the front bumper brackets were a bit off kilter which made it a bit tricky to fit but easily overcome with a bit of gentle persuasion. They were quite tight to both wings so I had to be really careful not to scratch my new paintwork. I need to figure out a way to bolt the 2 ends steady as the holes in the wings and brackets didn't line up but they don't flap around so I not too worried at the mo. Rear bumper fitted fine.

If I could work out how to attach photos I would.

in France, some cars (as mine for the rear) uses Harrington stainless bumpers. As club, we have a deal with them. You could probably do the same in UK as you are much more numerous.

It is a very good alternative to re-chrome old bumpers what often doesn't last.

Color and shine is different from real chromed steel... but that is ok !

Have heard many horror stories about re-chroming original bumpers - apparently the metal isn't great quality!

My rear one was rechromed very nicely. The underlying condition was solid though. I have another one for rechroming - with the correct plain centre section (my JDM car shouldn't have the number plate light cluster version but for whatever reason had one fitted when I bought it). Have to see how that turns out when I finally get around to it. Although I've also considered the Harrington route.

Where did you get the rear one rechromed, Richie?

I also had numerous engine bay items polished and chromed by Len (SH Metal Finishing). I've not used him in years though. He's moved the business from Openshaw to Droylesden since then, and he was very ill at one point. Looks like he's still with us and in business though. His prices were extremely good compared to just about everywhere else. Much cheaper.

Bear in mind we are talking at least 8 years ago. I think the rear bumper cost me £130. So mega-cheap even then. No idea what it would be now as I assume chrome has risen in cost quite a bit.

Len was always very busy unsurprisingly - little one man band type operation and very old school. Always looked filthy from head to toe. His old premises was in a little workshop unit in a courtyard behind a "massage parlour"...

Openshaw, for anyone who has never been there, is a sh*thole. :D
