Pricing up a good used RHD steering rack.

Here's a question. What would the forum Brains Trust think was a fair current asking price for a good, useable RHD steering rack?

More specifically, an RHD steering rack of the 1969 thru late 1973 type? UK 15.8:1 'fast' ratio.

Interested in opinions and recent examples for cross-referencing. Thankyouplease. :)

I would say it depends on several factors. Something that is now quite rare and in quite high demand is always useful good for a seller.... Also helps that the seller has a good reputation of not selling rubbish.

Got to be worth sticking up for £800 and taking offers.

I would say 800 is a bit 'toppy' (what you might call a Christian price...) but I'm all ears.

Here's a live example. Typically UK market 50 year old surface-patinated condition. Most of them tend to be like this before restoration, but can be made to look quite presentable with new boots (and panties) and a lick of paint.

Without a full strip down it would be hard to judge internal condition, but it is not seized, spins from lock to lock quite smoothly/readily and has no noticeable slop or play. No leaks, no visible knocks or damage, just surface pitting on the steel part of the casing.

I always keep an eye on eBay and look at the no reserve items for Datsun to see what people are willing to pay for parts, and try to judge prices from that , RHD conversion parts do to tend to go a bit higher than other 'normal' parts though.

I've just checked and the few racks I can see went for £99 (in bits) and £170 (complete) at end of last year and this January but in the past I've seen them go for around £500, usually more when they mention RHD conversation parts,

So maybe a bit cheaper than a early rack like yours. My thinking is around £700 to start the 'conversation' , my bet is you have had a few PM's already,

Most people would 'help' club members a bit with price I think , but its not cool when you help people with a price and then they just sell them for more.....

Yep, I helped a member with a rare part. He said he hadn't got much money and his car suggested that. 2 months later and he sold the car. I thought he would have many miles of happy motoring.

eBay is becoming less useful for judging prices - other than, as you say Gary, if you watch no reserve auctions and see what people actually are willing to pay for things. So much tat, so many ridiculously high Buy-It-Now prices seems to be the prevailing method for a lot of stuff. It maybe caters for/entraps those who have less history/intrinsic knowledge about how parts have been valued in the past and passed around between owners for. To some degree, it's turning into a platform for chancers to rip off newbies.

One of the most useful features on eBay is the 'completed listings' checkbox. You can see what items have actually sold for....

Of course, I'd naturally tend to be more accommodating to a 'known' buyer or a friend and would prefer it goes on a specific car rather than to be incorporated as part of a 'kit' that somebody is putting together to sell on. Also prefer good parts to go to private individuals rather than businesses.

Thanks for feedback so far. The guy that was interested (on another thread here) hasn't got back to me after I sent photos, so this one may be going back into the dark depths of my storage again...
