Although reliable and economical, initial Datsun offerings were fairly mundane conventional
family cars, but with the introduction of the 240Z in 1969 the marque’s
image received a massive boost. This 2+2 was a runaway success, outselling
every European sports car model in the lucrative North American market.
The 280Z arrived in 1975 followed by the ZX in 1978. The 280ZX was wider, larger
and heavier than its predecessors and the top speed was reduced from 125mph to
115mph with slower acceleration than before, but despite being more of a boulevard
cruiser than a high-performance sports car, the 280ZX was still extremely
popular. Sales of the 280ZX had reached over 446,000 units by the time production
came to an end in 1983 and, as one of the most popular sports coupes of the
past four decades, these cars will be cherished by enthusiasts for many years to
come.
44 international articles include road, track and comparison tests, a service guide
plus full technical and performance data.
