Agree with Ian - definitely better to have "honest" rust and no previous repairs so that there is nothing hidden, and proper, targeted repairs can be done (as I've been able to do on Dixie) without having to undo some previous numpty's bodges.

That really has been a horror show Derrick - so much previous f##kwittery to strip away and redo! What on Earth were people thinking layering up patch after patch? (TBH, I know the answer - they weren't thinking and were lazy!)

So tonight I've decided to tackle the lower floor area behind the passengers seat rail :(

0a14rm9.jpg

Drilled out spot welds where possible and peeled back old section to be removed  only to find a pen inside the rear chassis box section EXTRA:( imagine how annoying that could have been rattling around once the restoration was complete ,mind you i did find a 10mm spanner in the other side :EXTRAeek:

Section now cut out :) pretty pleased with condition of whats beneath all solid with only surface rust to clean off and treat with a rust protector :)

Also made a replacement panel :)

Trial fit or Not fit :EXTRAlol:just needs a little more time spending on this panel EXTRA:D but overall happy with the 3hrs in the garage tonight EXTRA;)

Then onto removing the outer sill :(

Cut the front end off the outer sill need some repairs to A post nothing to major but the inner sill is a different story
ozQOAh1.jpg

Then took the dogleg area off the out panel wasn't pretty in there had been cut about pop riveted repairs some welds and some pieces of the strengthening inner panel just hammered up out the way:eek: :cuss:

:(

So went on to cut the rest of the outer sill off only to find most of it had been replaced not that long ago as still bad black paint on it but what was strange was how it was done :conf2: it looks like they've left the top part of the original sill on and tucked the new sill in place and pop riveted it on :EXTRAeek:
:EXTRAeek::EXTRAeek:

inside sill showing the rivets :conf2:

Might be a good idea to weld some bracing in to strengthen
better to do before you cut too much out

Nick
just looked at the rest of the thread so it looks like you on top of it

I would be hopeless at this sort of thing. Unless I had a clear image in my head of how it should be, I wouldn't know how it should look to go back together. All credit to you Derrick!!

Good work Derrick. So satisfying to remove rubbish and replace with new metal. I assume you are going to repair the inner sill or do you have a new one?

Your car must have been really heavy with all those layers of metal and filler.

Good progress - keep it up.
