OK, thought I'd round this thread up with what eventually turned out to be the solution !!
There were lots of mods and upgrades along the way, and I'll cover those in another thread, but none of them cured the lack of desire to rev past the early 6000 revs. The final mod proved to be the answer, that being competition spec valve springs, now a set of new std spec springs would also probably have done it as well. Simply the springs in the refreshed engine that came in the car were shagged.
So I now have a 240 spec engine that is happy to pull hard to 7000, and probably further, but I'm on std pistons and I understand they don't like that
