Drag Race Challenge 2005 - Provisional dates

Tony
You may not have reached the 15's but you had the cleanest looking Z there and must have turned a few heads. Here's a pic I took trying to keek up on the M1.

LOL... thanks :D

You can tell that pic was from the morning though - the car was grey by the time I drove home.

(Oh yes, and actually doing more than 20mph, which was all I could do in the poxy traffic jam I ran into that evening)

Only 8 seconds? I thought it was faster than that. My old Sierra 4x4 would do it in 8 and the Z feels a lot quicker. Still, the Sierra never had traction problems (unless driven hard on gravel which was a real scream!)

RIGHT. If I can get along on April 10th, then it's low pressure in the tyres, stereo box and spare tyre out, technique revision, and a crash diet for me!

I will try and come on the 10th April, I may not participate as I know something will go wrong, will probably stall her or something!

I am pretty sure it aint easy from what I have read on here!

And as a further thought, just how much difference did my wheelspinning make? Half a second? A second?

And I reckon my spare tyre (that's the one for the car before I get any smart-alec comments) plus the stereo box probably weigh 60-70 pounds between them.

wheel spin costs alot of time, depends on the lenth of time spinning etc;
weight does matter but removing a spare wheel wont have that much of an effect if you cant get it off the line properly anyway..

the long and the short is practise clutch/ throttle control and eat salad (alot)

i cant belive you would think anyone would make smart alec comments ..:D

Hi,
The Z32 owners can fit traction control ...And dial in as much wheel slip as they want!...A little wheel spin can help spool the turbo up on a turbo car and saves slipping the clutch too much as well!
I think traction control works off the abs circuit though, so it's no good on the earlier cars.
Cheerz,
JEZ

You're better off trying to minimise the spin yourself. Traction control cuts power so much it costs more time than half a second of wheelspin. The main drag racing Z32 I know who has traction control fitted has an adjustable version dialled down to only 2%. Higher levels were costing up to a full second off his time. Had a similar experience with a Toyota Supra which has traction control as standard (and which resets to "ON" every time you start the car) - mid 14 second car with traction control on, 13.9 off!

Hi,
Isn't there a 'launch control' feature available for quick starts?
What difference would a wet track make to the equation too?
Cheerz,
JEZ

Drag racing does not take place on a wet track. Even the tiniest bit of the moisture ruins traction completely.

Launch control would be some sort of two stage rpm control I imagine which would help prevent over-enthusiastic application at take-off. Wheel slip can only be controlled by progressive cutting of power - there is no magic in traction control to increase the coefficient friction between your tyres and the track when revs are inadvertantly over-applied.

An LSD or other slip limiting device would help if not fitted - two tyres slip less easily than one. Once a non-LSD equipped car is spinning one wheel it goes nowhere fast with lots of smoke from one side as power all goes to the tyre with no grip!

BTW, thought I'd introduce another element - local group rivalry. Currently:

SEZ Group 20 points
HOE Group 7 points
Rest Nil point

Hi Mike
If i remeber correctly im a member of the south central group run by Zed2K so you will need to dish some points to this group and hopefuuly this will encourge others to attend, i will also be talking to Dr shemp as he would come under the same group so i think thats 13 points for south central:D

Hi all

Just a thought Neil, maybe all that extra fuel could be an advantage with the exta weight on the back wheels? I only had 1/4 of a tank and couldnt get any grip. Hopefully I'll have some rubber to match yours in the next round!!
Yes your probably right but with 245's on the rear i dont think ill have much problem with grip even when on 1/4 of a tank of fuel

smack my legs, now you know why i never followed a career in accountancey

7+6 = 13 i was just trying to some extra points :D

BUMP - BUMP!
Its April now in case you havent noticed!:)

Pete, I got the 240 MoTd yesterday, went to the Garden Centre today so as long as the weather shows a reasonable chance of staying dry I'll come along.
