I do actually think that they are a massive distraction to productivity - but can help too. It's a balance and discipline issue.
Err without them production could not take place given that they drive it.
Most businesses I come across including ours, couldn’t function without them FACT.
We have PC' on every desk top (hundreds), IPads for every salesman and everything is driven by numbers and stored on huge servers, whether it be financial, Sales, Production you name it, every fact, figure, full stop and capital letter is analysed by someone on a PC, if we don't then our competitors will and we will fail....end of matter.
(Awaits the "well how did we manage before them" ********)
Well the world has changed and it doesn’t matter whether it’s for the better or worse, we do things differently today and you cannot compare it with 10 years ago never mind 20.
I know quite a few old people who fight the little beige box and get scared pressing delete.
Like it or not, we are a computer driven culture.
As for a distraction…well that’s because managers aren’t managing their staff effectively, they should nip any “distraction” in the bud.
Anyway this isn’t about the legitimacy of the PC in our modern world so I digress
