Chassis Numbers - UK registered Zeds

Here's a copy of the e-mail / post I am punting around the UK Z community. If you want to know when your chassis no was registered or other DVLA details on your Zed - read on.

Hallo All,

I am e-mailing you all on this subject as I think you might have a vested interest in the answer. I have got your e-mail addresses because a) we have corresponded or b) you're a club/forum official or c) you're a supplier to one of the UK clubs / Forums.

Anyone who has followed the corrsepondence about chassis numbers on many forums and clubs (example thread: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/ubbforum/Forum6/HTML/000558.html ) knows that the DVLA figures about how many Z Nissans are there in the UK are, simply, wrong.

Many of you - especially the forum members of www.300zx.co.uk and Mike Feeney www.mjpauto.co.uk - have given detailed knowledge of chassis numbers. Enough for me to get a price from the SMMT to get hold of the real, raw data.

I now have a specification from the SMMT which will allow them to extract and send to me the data (including actual registered chassis numbers) for all known Zed chassis numbers from 240Z to 300ZXTT. The data will allow much analysis - including which car is an Nissan import / other import; also when first registered. And much else besides.

If I were as rich as Croesus, I would just have paid the fee for interest's sake. But I'm not. The SMMT's charge is £425 + VAT. So I need to find others who are equally interested in the registration data. From the forums and clubs, I have identified you:

Z Club
Datsun
Nissan Turbo Owners' Club
300ZX Forum

Suppliers
MJP Auto
Grasshopper
Zedworld
Safe and Sound
SE Nissan
Xoticar
Cybercraft

The simple idea is that if you all agree to contribute £25 + VAT (me, too) then this will cover the SMMT costs. I don't charge for my time for finding out the right questions and asking them. I propose that access to the data will be FOC for a) those companies who paid for it and b) members of the clubs / forums who contributed. Anyone else will have to pay - funds split between the clubs / forums who paid.

The complicated idea is that a few companies, clubs and people, will be interested in this information. We club together and buy it. Those in the consortium have access to the data. Anyone else who wants to know anything about their car will pay for it - whatever the founder members paid.

A) Are you interested in this data?

B) Would you be prepared to pay for it - either for your club, your company or you personally?

If everyone on this who gets this e-mail says "yes", it'll be £25 + VAT each. If only half of you say "yes", it will be £50 + VAT each.

Are we interested enough to answer the question "how many Zs in the UK and where did they come from?". Particularly if the answer includes all registered chassis numbers which must be most interesting for suppliers....

Cheers

Gio

Chassis Numbers;
Laudable idea but appears to be liitle enthusiasm judging by the replies. A fair number of chassis numbers, including RHD cars, are listed on the American Z site at www.zhome.com

Yeh - this sort of died a death.

The lawyer who tried to put the frighteners on me for being vocal about the parts charge once seemed to be keen on sponsoring the SMMT charge but then stopped answering e-mails, letters etc.

He might have browsed the 300zx forum in the middle of a toys out of pram episode and decided not to bother.....

Anyway, I did a shed load of work on this and if anyone wants to cover the cost of asking the question (not my charge, the SMMT one) I will give them all my research for free as long as the club gets a benefit.

Cheers - Gio
