Ballast coil or not!

First let me formally introduce my self, my name is Rich, I joined your club in December 2013 when I purchased myself a 1972 240z and have been soaking up as much knowledge as I can and would like to thank you all for your help so far.

My question is. With a Optronic Lumenition ignition system is it wise to use a standard/ non ballast ignition coil or a ballast coil? I would like to remove the ballast resister as to me it seems like just another thing to go wrong.

The lumenition system details say it can be used with either so I was wondering if there was any other reasons for ballast being left on?

All info welcome Rich.

Thanks Rob
Sorry to start a new thread for an old subject.

So I was at the same conclusion as SKiddell in the other thread.

The error is the assumption that
Quote:
'For use with all 12v ignition systems'
means its a 12 volt continuously rated coil

“For use with a 12 volt system” doesn't necessarily mean it’s a 12 volt coil

If it were a 12 volt rated coil then removal of the ballast resistor would be fine and in fact beneficial

I will go for the non ballast effort with a coil that is 12v 3 ohm when running as well at start up.

Cheers for the redirect Rob
