Is it just me, or am I seeing in the second pic a rather 80s-style rectangular patch welded on the front of that sill? Of course, it will be hidden behind the wing...

That was not my guys work.
And yes that patch was there before.
No need to cut that out to re-weld another patch. ><.
And yes, splash guards had been welded on from before.

The front wnd of the Z is almost done.
It has been slow work....
Not been to see it yet due to other commitments taking over my life and moving away to London for work, but I might have some pictures this week.

Wow I've just had a flick read through this entire thread, what a story! 
The sense of determination is admirable, not the most conventional or accepted approach but as long as you get there in the end then who am I to judge.
Quite a lot of banter to say the least, what's the current status of the bodywork? it looked in need of some serious fabrication work to bring it back to its best.
Glad to see another Z and MR2 owner on here as well, makes for a nice change
