Update! I got my car back! :D The ABS error is now fixed. It turned out to be the ABS Control unit itself producing a false error code. I got a second hand unit from Luke at Zcentre and the mechanic replaced the unit and the dashboard light went out. So very happy that is fixed as this was...

I don't want to cut corners with a job like this. If 4k you say is the minimum to spend on quality parts then that's what I would spend. If I had garage space and tools I would do the job myself. I've never attempted any kind of rebuild so I know it would be a very steep learning curve. But...
