Nah, I'm getting the hang of them now, and I've only had them 5 years.

Behold Edmond!!! I hold in my hand purest SU oil!!!! Now I'm showing my age! ;)

Just a small package my darling wife hid away for the last few days. Will be playing at the weekend if dry and let you know if the car drives differently!

Things in my Z life move at a glacial pace!! So an update:

The new carbs had improved throttle response no end but it was also too jerky at low speed.

I sucked out the 5w30 oil from the dashpots using a syringe and gave them a good clean. Then put in what I feel is the perfect quantity of "official" oil and the jerkiness all but disappeared!!

I figure the old oil was too thick and made the mixture initially too rich before the pistons could rise. Anyone else experienced this?

Hi Ali
My carbs are sitting in a box about to be shipped to Z Therapy. Were you happy with yours, any issues other than your previous posts?
Cheers
Paul

Hey Paul,

I was told it's the best money I'll spend on my Z and they were right. The car idles, accelerates, feels, sounds soooo much smoother than it used to and while I can't be sure about more power, it feels keener revving and torquier.

It was only when I took off my previous carbs that I realised just how worn they were esp around the throttle shafts.

The carbs were a doddle to install / set up and you get plenty of instructions on the v long DVD. They do come with the idle screws all the way out so you need to set that up approximately before bolting on (which I slipped my mind).

One thing I would say though is don't bank on the 6 weeks turnaround time, mine took quite a bit longer but worth the wait.

Happy in the extreme!

Hope that helps!?

Wouldn't you think that there was a market for this service in the UK?

I wrote to SU a couple of years ago suggesting they produced SU upgrade/replacement kits for the Z market. Instead we have to get hold of 50 year old carbs off Rovers and Jags.

I didn't even get a reply!

Correct, I've just phoned them this morning and basically it's - ummmm, I'll speak to my colleague and see what he thinks. Very negative phone call tbh. Amazing.

Let's see if they get back to me.

Rob why is it amazing

Surely just doing the maths on this says that there just isnt the volume of work to justify a UK company investing the time and effort for what would amount to a handful of units per year, plus it wouldnt be cheap and to many S30 owners :)p), spending money doesnt come easy, no matter how sensible and logical it may be.

But how much work is it? On my old 240 I had Rover TC HD8 carbs and they list those. I've just sent an enquiry to see how much they are.

I know there will be work re linkages/choke cable and jetting/needle/spring of course but some of that is necessary anyway for an owner fitting secondhand carbs. Let's just see how much the carbs alone are first.

Steve, can you remind me please why a 3 SU set-up is no good for a Datsun (unlike a Jag. or Austin Healey)?

Is it the firing order and port spacing issues?

Rob, the cost for them isn't really in the development and manufacture of linkage etc, it's the people cost of creating and supporting the SKU.

'Stock Keeping Unit' as opposed to Skinners Union ? ;)

Well they sell some pretty obscure kits for Fords with Aquaplane heads

I think it's worth remembering that the Nissan carbs are Hitachis. Hitachi used some of the SU patents under license, but made their own improvements too. There are not many SU-manufactured parts that will fit the Hitachis...

It's rather like the Mikuni-Solex situation. Mikuni Kogyo licensed the base Solex side-draught design, but did their own thing with it. You can't use many Solex parts on a Mikuni carb.

A fair and (certainly from my perspective) overlooked point.

Rob the issues on triple SU/Hitachi's would be the induction pulse sequence, triple weber/Mikuni etc are mated (on a Z) to an independant runner where as a carb like an SU would need a shared runner (unless your going for 6) it would work (people have done it) but its not ideal from an outright performance perspective.

Thanks Steve.

SUs reply to my Rover TC enquiry re this advert:

http://sucarb.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=Rover+TC

Dear Sir

Please follow our website link to view the parts we offer for Rover with AUD 92 HD8 carburettors fitted, we are also able to offer a full restoration of the carburettors, details which can be found on our website too.

So you can't buy them outright as the advert would suggest.:smash:

I have some of the proper SU dashpot oil and some 3 in 1 in the garage

rubbing both between fingers to compare, the SU oil does feel ever so slightly thicker,
tho still not as viscous as say 10/40 engine oil

Ive used engine oil in mine in the past and it seemed to run well enough, yet to run her
with the new needles and jets i put in a few weeks back along with the proper SU oil!

I have always used Everyman Oil (the can shown in most if not all Haynes Manuals) and never had any real issue. Its a light machine oil and is easily available at around £3.20 for 250ml in the UK. Probably the same as the SU stuff. Haven't a clue on viscosity but feels very light..

Im starting to think it would of been far better just to stick with the 240z Hitachi's i had on the
car, when i still had the L26 motor, rather than buy HD8 SU's of unknown origin/history and faff about
trying to get them sorted for the L28 myself, rather than going down the expensive tuning professional fettling route
Assuming you can actually find someone who knows what they're doing and aren't 400 miles away!!

Ali K

Hi Ali, do you know roughly what I should set them to or is all that covered in the CD?

Also while discussing them with ZT they said that they would declare the value of the carbs in the customs declaration on their return, but that they would be shipped marked "returned goods" or something like that. I phoned the dear old customs office and they said that s long as they were, there would be no Import Duty Charges.

Fingers crossed but doubtful
