Which would you choose.....?

So I'm looking for something to drive not as a daily but just for some fun whilst the 510 takes forever to get to a stage I can actually drive it and enjoy it. As some of you know it started as a rolling project but that ship has long since sailed... :D

I've always had a soft spot for an old Quattro, as I had one for eighteen months 25 years ago, so I am planning to go see this next weekend.

Then today this popped up on ebay...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224657213516?hash=item344e9d084c:g:-vEAAOSwsBFhcoOm

So, realising there may be a bias here given the name of the club, which would you buy....and why..?

RHD over LHD...? Similar money, similar bodywork issues, similar parts availability issues. Future values..?

Opinions please folks.

Cheers,

JK

Quattro. I've owned an Audi 100 5 cylinder - loved it. Can't lose on it imo. It seems cheap so be wary.

Zed is much easier/cheaper to work on should something go wrong and prices are still on the rise if more slowing maybe?

I think you can find a LHD 240 for that 280Z eBay car price. The 240 will do better in the future like for like cars.

I do like the first gen M3 too but it seems like they all have 150K miles or more in the states......I have had a few and they are great cars to drive daily.

Just my thoughts...

Given you've already got the 510 and previously a Z, i would definitely be looking closely at the Audi, there's one around where i live that i see occasionally, it looks and sounds amazing ;)

I've looked in more detail now and can see why it's cheap. It's rough - would you be happy with it looking like that? It has a red bonnet too and the radiator shroud is missing. As Mike says these can be expensive to own.

I like them but this might not be a good buy unless the owner will negotiate.

Have a look at the Silverstone auction at the NEC soon. Some nice cars including this Alfa :

I know the bodywork is rough, I've looked quite closely at the pictures too. I also know some really good bodyshop guys who I use everyday of the week and who I've spoken to about a respray....I don't want a show queen either, the Datsun is a full blown resto so one is enough and all old cars can be expensive to own, parts for the 510 cost a bloody fortune..!!

I'm planning to go with the mechanic whos doing the 510 to look at the rest of the car with regards to mechanicals next weekend. If it is as the guy tells me just the bodywork that needs sorting then I'm reasonably experienced in negotiating

Silverstone Auction cars are always silly money....that Alfa will be £3ok plus fees at least....

Jonathan, there is a Quattro specialist near me (Lutterworth).

I think a specialist assessment is wise unless you can get it cheap enough to pay for anything unexpected.

As you say you know all this. So why did you ask .

That white 280Z coming to auction soon (ex Salvage Hunters) is worth consideration. But LHD.

Isn't that the same 280z as he's talking about here? The wine red one for £19k?

Opinion really Rob, it's a forum so it's always good to get other views...

If the 280 was RHD it would be a different story I think, but a different price too perhaps...?

Get a Rhd 260z dash there still quite a few floating about and use a mx5 rack really is quite cheap to Rhd one you will add value your self if u do this Johnny

Cheers,

JK

Your missing my original point I think Christian, I don't want another full on resto project. I want something I can drive now while I wait for the 510to get finished

I've got a hunch that you are very keen on a Quattro. Please keep us informed. Stafford isn't too far from me. I spent many happy years there.
