What relay plugs in here?

Momentary main beam headlamp flash, activated by push-button on the end of the indicator stalk. In Japan this was nicknamed a 'Passing' flash, hence the 'Passing Relay' name assigned to the relay which activates it.

lots of Japanese motorbikes have a ‘passing’ switch on them also.

That's a fine question! I'm not 100% sure because I downloaded the FSM from somewhere a few years ago. It shows a LHD diagram of the dash.

The one I have is a scan of the original (you can see the print from the other side of the page in some places). BE-4 is labelled as 'Wiring Diagram' and BE-5 is 'Wiring Diagram (For U.S.A. and CANADA only).

Assuming all the different PDF sections I have belong together, the cover looks like this:
View attachment 37373

In case it's not very clear, it has P/N 20030C

I believe it is the North American market FSM for the 1972 'Model Year'.

Alan did you look at this link? Do you have the diagram mentioned?

'just working on more wiring and looking at the FSM (BE section), it shows a pair of "passing relays" in line just after the light switch'.

The Accessory relay provides power to the Blower and HRW only when the ignition switch is operated in the ACC or ON positions. There is a section of 3 fuses with ACC written on the fuse box cover. It prevents leaving them on by mistake.

I looked at the link, but it looked to me as though there was a certain amount of in-the-dark shooting going on there, and reference being made to North American market wiring diagrams in factory service manuals. I'm always reluctant - or at least a little cautious - in applying any of that directly to other market models/variants as there as just too many rolling changes and fundamental differences between them. Useful reference, but not 'gospel' unless the holes in the cheese slices just happen to line up...

I mentioned that link because up until that point I'd not seen mention of my configuration - then Paul came along.

Boy do they do it in a complicated way and as you will know the headlights work to a switched 'ground/earth'.

Exactly why i rewired mine about 5 years ago, used the existing wiring to trigger relays with all new wiring to the lights.

The flash 'passing button' always annoyed me because the dipped was switched off before the main came on, so there was momentary black out, not that it was used much, but annoying none the less. When i rewired, i changed it so the dipped is always on wether with main beam or flash.

So anyway I need another relay with a male connector (or I could use a modern one). I've opened my Pass and Acc relays to check them out - they are ok.

Andy, mine are relayed too. I can't understand why your's turned off the dip beam - that shouldn't happen.
