what diff in what car

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone knew what diff was originally fitted in what car and if they are interchangeable as a straight swap.

I understand the 240z has a 3.36 ratio but not sure on the type (R180 / 200??) and whether this differed between market places (e.g UK / USA)

Is the 260 the same since the 260+2 has a higher diff ratio of 3.7 (not sure on the type of diff)

Would say a 240 US diff swap straight into a 260+2 without prop / drive shaft changes??

The only reason I ask is that I have a 260+2 with considerable backlash and a slight whine (probably due to the PO tendency to track the car a lot) and was looking at what other alternatives there may be. I know my diff could be dropped and taken for a refurb but I can't see many parts being available off the shelf without machining new components and then the big question would be will they be set up correctly (pre-load, tolerances etc)

Hopefully with the knowledge you guys have I may be able to go searching for a good known diff as a replacement.

Many thanks in anticipation, Luke

USDM 240Z had that ratio in the R180, different markets had different ratios in the R180 though. Hopefully others more knowledgeable with step in to clarify further.

240Z = R180
260Z/280Z/280ZX = R200 ('cept for the auto version using an R180)

Ratios differed between destination markets but generally :

R180 =
North American market : 3.36
Europe and rest of export market : 3.9
JDM : am too afriad to be snipered to offer an opinion....higher beings may advise further
Auto boxes : 3.54

R200 =
North American market : 3.54*
Europe and rest of export market : 3.7 (late 280ZX manual had a 3.9)
JDM : see above

*280ZX, some were 3.7
