What did you do to your Z this week?

Bought a foaming attachment for my pressure washer and some snowfoam last week. So this morning I gave the Zed a much needed wash after the trip to Devon the other week.

Most reputable tyre or alignment places do the assessment for free. You get charged for an adjustment. Report this garage to trading standards!

I may try that but doubt I'll get my money back.

Had more fun with cars today. Went to take the Datsun out but wouldn't start. No power to the coils. Traced a bad connection back to the fuse box and fixed!

Noticed that the engine wasn't ever getting above 60°c, upon investigation the thermostat had failed so had the arduous task of flushing the system and refilling the coolant. I now have around 20L of liquid to dispose of

Changed the oil whilst I was at it as well.

This week and last week I've been trying (failing) to tune the Hitachi SU's. But I think I've cracked the code finally. Haven't drove it to confirm so, until then I shall wait to mention anything on here.

3 things:

Since I've looked at videos about doing the valves I'm consciously aware of a tapping noise and I think I should have a look. There's a huge battle between doing them cold and doing them warm. Not being skilled enough, I was going to do it cold first and then check when it's warm. Anyone done this recently and have some tips?

2nd thing is the vacuum and timing advance to do with the dizzy - where should I start with that? If anyone has a guide they use, that would be ace.

3rd thing is I think the PO has definitely painted over my screen wash jets (see pic) my question would be: are they meant to be that shape, or have they been crimped? Has anyone replaced the tubes? Mine are solid and will probably are too brittle to use.

Cheers fellas

The washer jets are crimped like that from the factory to provide the spray.
You can unbolt them from the engine bay bulkhead and possibly clear the small hole in the crimped end.

Thanks Mark, I'll take it apart and soak the part to get paint off and go from there. Hopefully it solves it

WRT the dizzy timing; get a timing light if you haven't got one (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110711496588)
unplug the vacuum hose from the distributor, set the distributor so that max advance is about 35 degrees.
plug the vacuum hose back in, drive.
I think I've got an old school version of the timing light, inherited from a customer 35 degrees you say? Magic number?

Some Dixie progress for update on that project thread, but now in a very good mood as I just scored a complete 18R-G twin cam engine for the Celica! Excellent news as it means I can do a complete engine and gearbox build without needing to lay the Celica up for months on end with no engine. I was going to convert its 18R single cam to R-G spec, but this acquisition makes the whole process much easier.
As for Z stuff, red Fairlady Z might need a new clutch slave; between use, the clutch pedal is going very soft. Pumps back up with a couple of pushes, but makes me think air is getting in somewhere.

Great news with the engine score Richie. On the clutch issue, it probably is the slave cylinder but also worth checking the master cylinder push rod seal inside the car. Had similar issue and found the master was weeping at the push rod seal inside the car. Could have got nasty if undetected.

Thanks - I'll check this out next time I'm over there. Don't fancy the sound of that at all. Thankfully, I use Automec DOT5 brake fluid, so it won't destroy the paint and encourage rust like other fluids.
