What did you do to your Z this week?

Got my new Subaru sti R180 gearbox ready for fitting next week with drive shafts from www.datsunrestomods.com not sure if anyone has these fitted yet. I’m keen to get some view and opinions. Was going to go with either customs from Dave mac in Coventry or the expensive kit from the z store but these seemed a good option.

Emptied the fuel tank of 15+ year old fuel and dropped the tank off the car in preparation for cleaning and re-sealing. The fuel that came out bore a greater likeness to brown sauce than petrol! :) . Managed to spill a bunch on the garage floor and I'm not sure that smell will ever go...

The tank seems to be in very good condition as far as I can tell so pleased with that.

Well done. When you put it back on keep an eye on the filters these cars are renown for blocking them.

Thanks for mentioning this Rob. I'm going replace the filter in the electric pump near the tank and the filter in the engine bay on the RHS. Let me know if I've missed one!

I'd put one before the pump. The pump may have an integral one but these can block and cause the pump to fail. After a while you may be able to remove it.

Just got the cam cover back from the powder coat so I spent an hour sanding out the lines and text, went fairly well apart from a couple of scratches in the black.

Very nice!

I sprayed mine up myself...debating whether to sand the text out. Are you protecting it with anything or just leaving it raw?20190504_204120.jpg

It was only £40 for coating with a load of other engine bits so I took the easy option! Wasn’t planning on coating the exposed Ali, but a quick coat of wax should be in order. Shouldn’t be too harsh an environment a dry engine bay.

Progress - although I now have some form of RSI going on in my right arm from wielding the drill. All chambers have their “scoops” cut. Just little tweaks here and there to match them. It’s all down to feel at this point. Amazing what you can achieve with patience, shallow breathing, and OCD tendencies! Now turned the head around to begin the other side, where much more meat gets removed.

The next phase begins:

Of course, after completely caking the red Z in aluminium dust during the winter porting exercise, this time I’ve been a bit more diligent...

Also, when taking a breather, I like to pop the lid off and look at this bad boy: #Wats

On that note, meeting with some fabricators tomorrow lunch to look at Dixie and see about getting a quote and something planned in to get that project moving again. Fingers crossed.

So got the diff and drive shafts in and had a couple of drives but nothing more than a few miles each way. The diff and shafts was an easy swap. although my exhaust now touches the corner of the diff as the casing shape protrudes a little more. Just a small adjustment required. The drive shafts are really solid and a perfect snug fit. Had to give them a whack to get clip right in before you can bolts up at the hub but fitting was simple. Doing both at the same time it’s hard to say what’s given what improvement but the delivery of power and stability is very strong. Used to have a few knocks and whines here and there especially after a drive but nothing. I was never sure if the noise was gearbox or the 4 speed American diff but it was clearly diff. Hitting the higher numbers on the motorway I can see that now as it struggled to deliver the power especially in 5th gear with vibrations. Now there’s no give or slackness or vibration anywhere. With close to 300hp now and a little more to come I have a lot of confidence and don’t feel I’m holding the cars potential back anymore. Very happy.

I've been at the Pod today - in my lad's BMW 335i. Some great cars and jet cars.

Courier visited earlier with these - Dixie’s future rear tyres, thanks to an eBay tip-off from Seikoking while chatting at Tatton:

Need some fronts now, probably 225/50/15.

The N42 head project has stalled as I’ve been diagnosed with tennis elbow - caused by doing the combustion chamber work with the big power drill. I think if I want to resume that work anytime soon I’m going to need to ditch the drill and upgrade my air compressor to run the nice little right-angle die grinder I have.

On the project Dixie front, the fabricators haven’t prepared the quote yet but are very enthusiastic to do the car and hopefully relatively soon. Fingers crossed that the potential bill doesn’t scupper progress!

You sure it wasn't from something else Status ?
What June caught you doing once or twice when you didn't close the screen quickly enough ;)

Outer tendon is tennis elbow
Inner tendon is golfers elbow
Ask me how I know, I play both :D (there's some ammo for you in return Paul)

Super nice tyres btw Richie, make sure you don't leave them lying around the barn ;)

They will be for road and other uses. Should be fun if caught in a rainstorm sometime!

Going for the 15” Watanabes did highlight the limited choices compared to 16” both in profiles and brands. The R888s were one of only a couple of choices that offered a size in that ballpark.

Rich when you said you had some fancy boots I thought you meant tyres.
;)

I thought my predilection for cowboy boots was well known? Although that particular black pair are a bit challenging when driving - taller heels than my others, which throws my throttle pedal control off!
