What did you do to your Z this week?

I replaced the broken ballast resistor and installed new ignitor, electronic coil pick up and cap.

Wouldn't start, so I removed spark plug 1 and checked I had spark, which I did. Then I decided to do compression tests of each cylinder and checking spark on each plug.

Got between 115 and 135 psi. Thought that was a good range, nothing massive between them.

On cylinder 2, the engine sneezed fuel back through the SU air intake (filter off) and made a short-lived fire on the inner wing. I had an extinguisher at the ready in any case. Engine must have been flooded with too much fuel.

Speaking to my mechanic friend, he said to try starting without the choke and see if it's overfueling. Which I already expected, but not enough to start without choke. And it started from cold, no chokes :\

Needs a good tune still :] but happy that the new parts are doing the job.

Unfortunately I've had to pack the car and bits away until next year. I'll be away abroad with work for a while. So much for having it ready for next summer. 2F09FA38-B6CF-4895-9EBF-AC055641D856.jpeg

After stripping down the rear struts to take the springs off, I was very disappointed to find the rear shocks cream cracked. They were installed no more than 14 years ago and probably done a conservative 10,000 miles. These were Nissan shocks so somewhat disappointed they have failed.

That’s sad to hear.

i bought an indoor cover for mine, as I’m sick of it sitting there collecting dust. So now the cover can collect dust instead! Will try it tomorrow if I get the time. I have to move loads of stuff off the roof ...

what are you taking it all apart for Mike?

Fun

Well one reason is that I wanted to replace the springs for a new set. I have a new fuel tank I want to put in. The final and third reason is I wanted to swap out the R200 3.7 and go back to an R180 3.9. Although I’m having doubts on the last one. With the issues I had with the company that rebuilt the diff I’m wondering if it’s such a good idea.

It has arrived - new V5C! At last the Zed is now a 'Historic Vehicle' so tax free! It's been a bit of a hassle, but now sorted. Just remember if you are applying for the same make sure you fill out a V10 form and write 'Historic' under Tax Class in addition to what it says on the Government website.
