What did you do to your Z this week?

and was it awesome?

Well yes and no, it was great to drive it after the best part of a year. Unfortunately it reminded me that after putting the new wheels and tyres on it’s developed a strange wheel wobble between 70 and 80 that comes and goes. Absolutely chuffed that I have finally sorted the exhaust fumes issue. I never seem to get it just right though, always something.

I took my ali rad out the other day and got down from the top of the garage this old original, recored one I got from Saccy a few years ago. It was coated in some kind of rubber paint which I have spent most of the week seemingly, getting off. Going to finish it in a nice gloss black. Some of the solder needed cleaning up a bit ...

Thanks Jon its something that crossed my mind yesterday so will give it a check over tomorrow. I was also wondering if it might have something to do with failing front shocks? It's not something I have ever replaced and was thinking about doing that this year.

Basics first. EXTRA:D
Swap the rear wheels to front and go for another drive that allows you to get into same speed zone.
If the wobble is still there, then its unlikely to be a poorly balanced wheel.

Yes thought about doing that too, I’ll do all the basics first then move on from there if it’s not sorted.

I’ll check the bearings anyway just because I may as well.

Check the Tension Control rod bushings too, huge difference from worn out to poly.

Hi Mike,

I’ll give them a look to. Controversially I did have poly bushes but after a spate of people having the tension rods break I went back rubber. Only did that maybe two years ago.

By way of an update I’ve checked things through but couldn’t say oh yes that might be it. I did reset up the bearings as per spec and I would say they might be a fraction tighter as the split pin went in a slightly different location.

Another thing that did strike me and is now rectified was the cleanliness of the hub mating face to the wheel. The old Wolfrace wheels didn’t have much of a mating face from memory but the new wheels have a face to face fit all round. When I took them off there were proud lumps of something tar like material on the back face of the new wheels. It’s all now been cleaned as well as the hubs. Just wonder if there was a slight distortion from the grot between wheel and hub, time will tell.

I won’t change the wheels from front to back at the moment as that’s a bit of a ball ache. So now just waiting for a clear weather window to get the car out again and see if I’ve made a difference.

Nothing done this week on the Datsuns, but managed to sort out a burst fuel hose on the GTR.
The braided AN10 feed hose had degraded and failed underneath the car.
It happened a few of months ago just as I was getting it ready to go into the container to be shipped from Cyprus.
I ended up having to run a temporary line from the lift pump, out of the boot, down the side of the car to the fuel rail just to get it loaded.
I went with Teflon this time as it should last a lot longer and car always stunk of fuel with the rubber braided hoses.
The AN6 fittings and hose were easy enough to work with but the AN10 and AN12 took a couple of attempts to come up with the best technique (along with the purchase of a set of shears).
Once they were all changed out, I decided to re-route the hoses to the surge tank and make a new mounting panel for my external pump and filters out of some carbon sheet I had lying about.

Very neat work, Mark.

Just been carrying on trying to improve a few bits in the engine bay ... the voltage regulator connectors needed some work.

The grille was pretty good, no dents or damage but some overspray and just filthy, so I decided to take it apart and paint it to match the rear light surround.

It’s all back together and painted but I haven’t got a pic of it ...
