What did you do to your Z this week?

More interior stuff. How does that leather thong thing get tied? Knot? Bow? No idea!

Had it all back together in the heater/flaps dept and like a fool had not looked at the non-op clock. So took it all out again and got the clock out ... removed two of the three small nuts on the back but doing the third one the whole thread and nut spun, so gave up and put it back for now. At last I can get the heater cables off now in about two mins ...

Putting it all back and a corner of the small piece which shrouds the interior light on the central panel came away - an old repair from years ago it looked like, so I gave it a bit of gf mat on the back for strength.

I replaced this horror:

with this new beauty :

I noticed it while I was putting my alternator back on.
The alternator needed new brushes after probably less than 20,000 miles. I think that's one of that side effects of liking revs.

I think I've caught something nasty of Ali this week. my z keeps letting me down.
After the alternator fun, I had to remake a brake flare to fit my new front calipers. my starter motor then packed up at sainsburys. luckily a nice young man gave me a tow start.

my dash might be getting to the point where I might have to clean it.

The long and short of it is that when I had owned the car for two years (and did eight miles in it as I was doing other stuff) I decided to redo the interior. Then after getting it all out I cleaned it up and redid some of it. Then I redid our bathroom, sundry other jobs etc and three years later here we are. Anyway, I thought the two bolts holding the hatch strut mount were how it was fitted originally (although I do remember thinking at the time it was strange).

Anyway, as I now know, it is spot-welded but mine has obviously broken at some point and been fixed by the mount being drilled and attached by the bolts. when I removed the interior panel on that side it was all chewed up as long bolts had been used which went through the edge of the interior panel, with nuts and washers, eventually breaking the panel.

So I cut the broken piece out and set about making a new piece which I did roughly three years ago. When I came back to it this weekend I found it wouldn’t fit, so I used smaller bolts and inserted them from underneath. then I had to remake the piece using the old piece and recutting and refibreglassing behind it, raising it slightly. It’s not great but it’ll have to do.

Original jute in position and the carpets going in. The carpets are pretty worn in places, so am I and I’m only a few years older than them so I might treat the car to some new ones from Romas if he is still doing them.

Original unused Bridgestone spare looks the part but I don’t think it will see the inside of the wheel well again ...

I’ve ordered a seven-piece carpet set from Romas now. The original ones I have are okay but badly worn in places obviously after 48 years and I think the interior will benefit from the new ones.

Been using the ratty zed quite a bit lately (due to all the others being in bits) and the battery doesn’t want to hold a charge. I getting fed up with starting using one of those pocket size jump packs so finally treated the old girl to a new battery.

That should keep the clock going!

However I do know that they can be very powerful but you have to treat them with care.

Finally nearing the end of the interior refit. Got the dome light working as well ...

Door cards need to go on, then I have to finish the driver’s seat and put the wheel back on, then I’m done ...
