Err...I checked my water two days ago (I normally check it every couple of weeks) and it had gone right down and every time I topped it up (must have taken a couple of pints&#33<img src="http://www.zclub.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'> bubbles of air came to the surface and the level depleted again! It did eventually top up and I took it for a spin, checked again and it was still at the correct level.

But I looked yesterday and it had gone right down again....ARSE!

Should I be fearing the worst here guys? D'oh!

If this is water pump, then you should be able to see signs of water loss at the front of the engine. The pump is a bit buried in the front cam belt covers, but the water usually finds its way down onto the undertray. If the pump is only leaking very slightly, this may take time to show - the pump has a little bleed hole in it to warn of imminent failure by allowing water out.

If no external signs of leakage, start thinking head gasket(s). If you run the engine up to temperature with the rad cap off (take care, don't just take it off when hot) you may see signs of combustion gas bubbling up into the water flowing across the rad. A chemical test may be used to confirm the presence of combustion gas. In an extreme case, hot water may well up out of the filler neck so stand back. An extreme case would usually show as white smoke from the exhaust.
