Tracker

I want to fit a tracker to the Z
Quick glance on eBay there appear to be several low cost units that you can track on your phone.
Any one got any experience of how well they work?

I've had one for years, works well.
I can txt it and it'll reply with a google maps link for where it ia, also I can tell it to txt me if it moves.
I also have it tracking on my website, but that isn't free :)

If you don’t mind me asking which one did you get?

That's what is have on all my cars. Cheap to buy and not an excessive subscription.

Alerts to your phone are quite configurable and the driving stats can be interesting.

You can also share a link with people for a period of time which can be fun.

For those who have trackers, what is your experience of the battery requirements in situations where car has been stored away for say 3 months?

Do these units draw down a huge amount of battery juice to keep functioning ?

yeah, wouldn't work for mine. The battery goes flat in about a week, so I keep the charger attached.

No problem with my 240Z. The battery lasts for a long time anyway, but I've also installed one of those isolators with the screw fitting to disconnect the battery connection. You can still install devices to a permanent live so my tracker is on that. Everything else is isolated.

Also, I forgot to say the tracker tells you the battery voltage and you can even set up an alert to warn you if the battery falls below a certain level.

I have the rewire unit, it's ok but where I have it hidden means I don't get GPS signal inside a building (garage). It still gets GSM signal and GPS kicks in when I'm driving but worth considering where you are going to hide it.

Permanent charge/ live feed...

It seems these tracker options are not viable for situations where car is parked in a lock up. Away from home. No options for a permanent charge.

There must be a product out there with low battery demands...

NOKIA 3310 ?

Doing what Paul S does by using an isolator is about the best you can do in my opinion, there is no parasitic drain from any other wiring in the car, just the tracker itself, which i doubt will drain the battery to a point it wouldn't be able to start the engine within 6 months, assuming it's in good condition and fully charged before storage.

A potentially drained battery is still better than a charged battery that's now at the other end of the country because it's been nicked!

That looks stealthy!

The Rewire one can activate an external device too so it can also kill something like the fuel pump, but not out of the box.

Our cars nicked will be box trailered so useless to stop them running and not visible. Also either shipped out of the country or broken for parts.

Until such time the thief has located and disabled the device it keeps emitting GPS signals. And 9/10 times the scumbags drag / lift/ drive off the car in its current state and only start dismantling/ stripping /boxing it once they are back at base.

So such a tracking device IS useful as it could lead the feds to the base....

You can set up vibration alerts, so if it's moved you'll know. The model I have also has an internal battery in case they pull the car battery.

They work world-wide too.

Now that’s very cool!

I have a really cheap and clever immobiliser on my Z, automatic so no hidden switch or anything. Happy to talk about it privately but don't want to advertise where it is and how it works on a public forum.

Not looked into trackers yet but an apple airtag would be easy to hide, not rely on car battery and be pretty reliable. Certainly in the first few hours of being pinched, not sure how well it would work once its burnt out in a field or in a container on its way somewhere terrible.
