Toyota TA22 GT

As you pay scene tax on any Ae86 stuff;)

LOL - very true :)

there aren't many TA22s left (rust was worse than the Zs and no 'book-value' for many years condemned them to early graves)

To be fair to them, I'd say they aren't as bad for rust as a Z - particularly underneath.
However, they have their own problems around the front scuttle (which is part of the main body) and on the A pillar - mine is very bad.

Don't talk to me about engine swaps - I respect the work that goes into them, the imagination but never, never on MY Z - it's the soul of the car

Similar thoughts from me really although I'd never say never. I did consider the 1600cc 4AG for my 22 as it's very in keeping with the original car - available 16v, 20v or supercharged - and it's still Toyota.
But as I sourced the 2TG, thought I'd keep it as it suits my skill level.

A bit of an update :

it appears that the GT arrived here in 1973 and that in the image below (assume the colour to be yellow) is exactly what I've seen - note the rear spoiler, half-body lines ending in 'GT' and the vinyl roof. It has the exact same wheels too.

Toyota claim 124ch (108 DIN) but silly people state that a 5 speed 'box was only optional on a 240Z !

Personally, its the RA28 or TA27 that really does it for me - certainly would not mind doing one of these as my next project in a few years (it will either be another Z or a Celica Liftback). Lots of engine swap options, a few of them relatively straightforward bolt-ins too (I think this is true of the 1G GTE from the mk3 Supra for example):

For me, the blue one is gorgeous, a tadge too low, the mirrors cut the line and should be on the doors and A pillar and that's where I stop liking it.......the interior looks cheap (I bet it wasn't) and without an original 2T-G engine, it's just another 'tuning' exercise.

Amazing work - hat off to the chap and why not on an ST but not for me. Am I right in remembering that the ZG arches fit on the Celicas or are they of a different shape ? Food for thought...........

The liftbacks are cool...........two things - the first model is.....the original with purer lines and secondly, the RA28 is known as a baby Mustang whereas the first one is known as a Celica - I like the orginal identity, kinda like going for the 240Z instead of a 280ZX 'cos it's too Corvette-ish (if anyone has ever quoted such).

Sean -

That rear spoiler is something I have only seen on Ebay and to my knowledge isn't a stock part. However, if Toyota had a Sport Options list in Japan like Nissan did then perhaps it was available new in period - those Ebay sellers must have got their inspiration / mould from somewhere.

There are two types of "fender flare" available. Mine are similar to what you see on ZG's but they are Celica specific. The other type are fuller and cover the complete arch - I'll try and dig out some photos when I get home.

I think 150bhp is fairly achievable with either of the original twin-cam's. Early 18RG's were rated that anyway.

Strange that an original Toyota publicity photo shows that rear spoiler...........it's like here with 240Zs - they don't have rear reversing white lights in the rear light assemblies - market specific ?

ANY photos appreciated - I'm beginning to drool.........

Its done to JDM style, hence the mirrors on the wings rather than doors:rolleyes:...the front lip, watanabe lookalikes and JDM toyota mirrors should really shout the styling influence.

Lovely engine choice though...;)

For a safe reliable 160-170BHP, why not drop in a SR20VE?. If you are a purist, then you should noteven be contemplating after market ZG style arches, leave it on stocko 13" wheel trims and 165SR13 radials:D.

Sean, are you saying that you would not buy a RA28 just because some folk refer it to a baby stang? I can understand if the styling does not appeal to you but to say no to a car just because you are deemed to be a wannabe is a first for me. The same folk refer to the s30 as a wannabe E type, what then??:D

Rob, any pics of your celica, I havent seen it for ages...last seen @ santa pod about 4+ years ago:thumbs:

I recognise the JDM look of course - I don't like it - it's a trend, just like V8 swapping was, Rovers in the UK, G-noses and current RB swaps - ultimately, the classic look (and sound of an L-gata) of an S30 wins through - wing mirrors spoil the line to a greater degree on a Celica than a Z - I don't know why and it's my personal perception.

Purist ? Me ? But I wouldn't want a turbo in any swap and in any case, it would be the least desirable mod 'cos the 2T-G is what made a GT a GT !

No, I wouldn't want an RA28 - I already have a hatchback - what appeals to me in the Celica is that it's different to the Z (4 seats, all side windows wind down, no window frames and not anywhere near as powerful) and similar - the original series dash, the seats, the original series shape and nobody calls it a baby camaro....and I can piss over an E-Type and 911 any day - they're hunks of shite.

Rob - I prefer the full arches and the photos do show well that the Celica needs a tadge lowering all the same.

Anywone got a nice close-up or two of an early series dash, centre console and seats please ?

It's looking very sorry for itself in my other garage at present with it's nose in the air and all the front lights, lower valance and grill are out.

I started working on it year before last whilst waiting for my Z engine, but only got as far as welding up one side.
Did fit the twin-cam though and almost rebuilt the front suspension.

Of course - we got nothing like that amount of choice.
UK GT's only available in Bronze or White.

Oh kissy-kissy - definitely worth a bottle.

Interesting extra centre console with clock and extra ventilation in it - what else is it for ? Otherwise, the clock by itslef reminds me of same period Fords.

Have to say, I prefer the darker dashes rather than the false wood.........even if it really isn't all that bad and better than the later RAs.

Thanks.
