AC are still about, and producing Cobras with carbon fibre chassis I believe, or there is definately some CF in there. Using a Ford v8, the cars don't quite look right to me.

That and AC are now based in Malta.....

I have no explanation.

Heritage "Something that is passed down from preceding generations; a tradition" all of this implies the past, previous, preceeding, before, prior, history.

Ok, French heritage (as I mentioned) originateors of De Dion suspension, front wheel drive to mention just two innovations!
Other previous marques (which dies a graceful death and not dragged through every receivers' court in the land, bailed out by foreign competition and then dropped when all the good stuff had been copied - don't you think BMW are pi**ing themselves after having sucked Land Rover - and wow the X5 and X3 - now the references in on-road 4x4s. Anybody accused them of copying like they did the Japanese ? And the krauts must also be giggling now they own (RR and Bentley) what they couldn't defeat in 1940 - we just 'gave 'em away - bravo chaps - Douglas Bader must have turned in his grave ! It was also marine aviation sport, not just aero sport :) !

You have taken my list and mearly updated it with current status of ownership/trading proving what?

-- not when they made the V8 Vantage or the DB5 Aston Martin bought Lagaonda for the origins of that motor and the BD 5 and 6 is a great car, especially when it rains.....and one has to cancel the wipers at exactly the right moment to return them down to the windscreen - no auto return - fabulous at that price !

-- If it wasnt for the racing pedigree of the merlin engine (all be it aero racing) we would all be wearing lederhosen and speaking with a very pronounced Bavarian accent.

-- Ever heard of the Bentley blowers, need I say more

?

-- won plenty of prestigious races -- on French soil still a great looker but crap to drive - they call it a mans' car 'cos it's such a handful - not because it's any good ! Dreadful shame that the 240 is likened to it - real insult !

-- If you were to give one (Oo err  ) you wouldnt complain only if it was a CV-8 ! The rest I wouldn't touch !

-- but without them the Cobra wouldnt exist - no-one impresses me with a Cobra and now with all the copies, good and bad......

-- no joke smart alec check out le Mans in 1933 or Brooklands and in 1931 at Montlhery the supercharged EX12O became the world's first 750 cc car to set records of 100 mph +, I detest MGs and all that goes with them - really - I hate'em !

---TR4, 5, 6 -- iconic Look nice (TR6 styled in Italy but again, a bag of cack to drive in the dry...in the wet, pull over and eat your packed lunch whilst waiting for better weather - yes, it will ciome, even in England !

-- or according to the Lotus website Proton but they wernt when they built the Elan, the 7 or the Esprit or the worlds first affordable mid engined car (Europa) or the worlds first fibreglass monocoque (Elite) nevermind the single seater race cars.
Chapman was a genious and never given the support from Govts to dominate how he and his designs could have, both on the track and in road going car construction but why then are Lotus' behind 240Zs in the HSCC ;) ? They're all made out of re-cycled Sainsburys' plastic bags but all that plastic would appeal to you, eh ?

The point I was making was that you may have lots of bouncy suspension Citroens built by maserati, a few sporty Renaults with a smattering of Bugatti but thats your lot. I just checked in the encyclopedia under "French sports cars" and guess what the answer was "bugger all"

Citroen bought Maserati but then add Ligier, Matra, Gregoire, Chenard et Wlcker, Hotchkiss, Bonnet, Delahaye, Talbot, Facel Vega, Alpine.........oh, and Renault and Peugeot. Not sporting but having made an amazing change in motorists' choices, the Espace - still the reference for MPVs !

Ok different angle, pinnacle of car racing? Supposedly F1?

How many teams are based in England vs France?

Spanish driver, and check out the F1 team address (from RenaultF1.com)

Enstone address
Renault F1 Team,
Whiteways Technical Centre,
Enstone, Oxon.
OX7 4EE, United Kingdom

The worlds best race?? I don't think so.

Also we have a local team that runs in the bike LeMans race called Phase One. Now my friend makes the wiring harnesses for the bikes, and you wouldn't (or maybe you would) believe the amount of cheating that goes on with the French just so they can win their own race. Bent officials, the lot, I wouldn't say Le Mans was the worlds best race for cars or bikes....

That's just an address - Renault is a French team -argue that one ! And their engines are built just south of Paris ! And ok, a Spanish driver but not an English one and don't do the typical British one using Coulthard - he's Scottish - where are the English ? Button was...............nowhere !

Le Mans 24 Hrs since the early 1920s :

Don't suppose that we'll see you there then - eh ;) ?

If it was that bent, it wouldn't attract all the worlds' media, fans from ALL over and a very varied INTERNATIONAL line up of cars AND drivers - but you know best eh ?

That's just an address, yeh it's a PO Box, no one is actually there. Most F1 teams are around the Oxford area and for good reason, British engineering.
http://www.globalmotorsport.net/F1_Teams_Renault.htm - look at where they are based.

From RenaultF1.com the teams Technical Director is Bob Bell, Chief Designer is Tim Densham. This is purely a guess but they don't sound typically French names. I maybe wrong though.

I'm not going to argue drivers, I was just pointing out he isn't French. Knock Button all you like but he's better than your best hope, Franck Montagny lol.

I don't think you can have "The best race", there are so many. I'd say the Isle of Man TT or any other road racing (North West 200 etc), you can keep your track stuff, 180mph on a road with no special surface, gravel traps etc is hero stuff. I can't say the 24hour race interests me, I don't follow the cars or care. Well I paid attention the the Audi Diesel just because it's different, I want to go for the experience of driving there in the Z, bbq and wine with good company!

I expect all racing is bent in some ways, but Le Mans isn't the pinnacle of motor racing in my eyes (much as I do like it, don't get me wrong I don't think it's the worst either!), but it's better than Monaco, what a joke of a circuit that is.

I'm probably inclined to agree with you re Motorcycle racing BUT WE ARE DISCUSSING CARS ! So the question still stands ? And your answer is.......?

Have you ever been to Le Mans ?

So what is the best Russ - stop dithering ?

Renault is still a French team my friend ! BTW I think Jean Todt is still French too ! I agree with you and Frank M. but Sebastien Loeb isn't doing too badly !

You're right, Loeb definately has it!

No, my experience of racing circuits is limited to this country, but that doesn't make my opinion any less valid surely? Or have you experienced every track in the world? I have watched racing from Le Man, driven it on the playstation many times, it's nice enough..?

I don't have a favourite circuit, maybe I'm dodging the question, or perhaps I'm not blinkered by national pride?? Ok then I happen to like Thruxton because the surface is bumpy and so it's pretty fast, from the third corner you can see 75% of the track, and you get BTCC there and bikes. It's more grass roots and less bling, which appeals to me. Not the best circuit I suppose, but I like it most from what I've seen.

As for the best CAR race, well I don't watch much because its just a parade really. I like BTCC because they aren't afraid to nudge eachother, the cars are vaguely like a car you could have yourself, and the weight penalty system provideds generally close racing. F1 is a yawn every time unless they crash. I don't have the stamina for endurance racing. Maybe the Monte Carlo rally, WRC cars on massive wheels, skinny tyres, inches from the side of a cliff. That's pretty cool.

Times have changed Russ - way back in '92 when I organised the first Jap sportscar do at Goodwood; proud ? You bet I am !

I had a load of T_shirts printed and I was severly ticked off for having chosen the Japanese and Union flags flying together ! Why ? Reason stated was that it might upset war veterans and families thereof ! .............and there's your signature :) !

Don't get me wrong - I love it and The Club sold all the T-shirts !

Goodwood is a really nice place to visit. I nearly said the Goodwood hill climb as a race, but it doesn't really count. But you get a superb selection of cars there.

I can't say that thought had even entered my head! :) I was born in '83, nearly 40 years after the war, and to me it's a history lesson and I have no appreciation of what it was like. Indeed times have changed. Enough said. I wasn't in the war, nor was my dad, my grandad who was has long since gone. I doubt anyone here was.

Anyway whoever ticked you off should be ticked off for being too sensitive, too pc, too nanny whatever. Should we not talk to Japanese people unless it's in secret in case we upset someone from that period?? Much as I appreciate what the war veterans did for all of us  it's not 1945 any more, or much as I hate to say it should I wait until the last war veteran passes on?? At some point you have to draw the line, no one is sensitive about Trafalgar etc any more, or should I stop talking to you :)

BTW I'm not on the defensive in case you thought I took it the wrong way, just over opinionated and you are good for discussion.

Your opinion is always valid Russ BUT you staed that in your opinion Le Mans wasn't the best motor-car race in the world and I assume that is because you can propose an alternative - not just a series like BTCC, not just a circuit like Thruxton but a race.....with a title ! I've always fancied going over to watch the Daytona 500, for the experience and the atmosphere but I don't think it will top Le Mans :) ! Please don't formulate your opinion of Le Mans based on a console game - you have to be there, you get there the Tuesday or Wednesday before and strike tent - build your village. You leave Sunday evening or Monday and everything in between is cars, cars, cars and a great time with NO language barriers, NO yobbos, NO nationality clashes !

All in all, you have nothing new to say - you are becomming a pedantic bore, perhaps suffering from a dictionary suppository!

As I haven’t used any BIG words so far in this thread, you are obviously still reeling from having to look up two fairly basic 6 letter words previously – or is it my goading you for being a track-day master that’s bothering you? At least now you know what a dictionary looks like – even if it is shoved up my arse.

I’m being pedantic because I am trying to get to the bottom of what it is you are trying to say. A lot of your comments are so off the wall it’s difficult to keep up, and when you get quoted with a view to receiving some clarification on your “point” we seem to get a completely random answer that has no bearing on the question that was asked in the first place.

This is a classic example -

Earlier (S30) Zs are lighter than later ones (280/300/250 etc) - clear now ?

- and just goes to show you haven’t read, or can’t understand what is being asked. It’s not just my questions to you; you do it to many people.

If I had the time or the inclination I could show you a host of your comments that completely contradict something else you have said in different threads. If you are going to be opinionated on here, please at least stick to your guns and stop dancing around making blind comments which you can’t back up – now that’s boring.
