Too much play??

Hi Guys & girls,

Just wondered what you thought of the play I have in my prop / diff in my 260 + 2. The video attached hopefully shows this. I would have expected a small / slight amount of play for engineering purposes but seems too much in this instance.

You can hear it as a clonk when taking up drive mainly between 1st & 2nd gears (can't really notice in the upper gears)

I had read that the diffs on these cars were fairly bulletproof and shouldn't give much trouble. I assume I have the R200 diff although I cannot see any markings / stamps etc on the diff casing (where would I find this out??)

Am I to worry? is this an imminent rebuild / replace or do I just ignore it and only take action if it becomes a lot worse?

Your experienced thoughts and comments are most appreciated

Thanks, luke

They start with around 6.5thou of backlash and this gradually increases as parts start to ware. The majority of rebuilds I have experience with have too little backlash and the diffs start to lock as the internals expand which destroys the crown wheel and pinion. Ideally you would want a hot diff to have a tiny amount of backlash so you don't get the clonking. All of my cars have more backlash than I would like but I prefer this to a damaged diff.

So the clonking is not a worry but more of an annoyance? I’ve been mummy cuddling between 1st and 2nd to avoid putting too much load into the diff since in my mind the clonking is effectively forcing the pinion into the crown wheel causing further damage. Maybe I need to grow a pair and not worry!!!

As long as you're sure it's a bit of play in the diff I wouldn't worry about it Luke.
