Timing chain tensioner design

Hi all,

Fitted a new chain tensioner today, but noticed that on the top, there was a little plastic piece.

Comparing to my old one, I thought it must be some kind of dust cover or something to stop anything getting inside, but it was stuck fast and I couldn't get it out.

Any ideas whether it's supposed to be there or not?

I can't remember what a standard tensioner looks like. I'll dig one or two out at the weekend if no one has come up with an answer.

Thanks Jon.

Looking at some photos online I think it does need removing.

In terms of operation I'm guessing oil is fed in through the back and then that hole in the top you see on the one on the right in my photo is the oil out when pressure is achieved.

If you could confirm that would be helpful.

Bear in mind that some versions of the L-gata 'module' (there were loads of them in 4 & 6cyl varieties...) included an oil spraying function from the chain tensioner, throwing oil onto the chain and gears. Probably not strictly needed as it all tends to oil itself, and many versions didn't bother with it. I think most tensioners sold these days are 'universal' type.
