Ticking noise from gear box area

I believe there may be a plastic bush at the base of the gear lever that can cause a ticking noise? Is this correct and can someone please tell me if there's a cure? Mine makes this noise...even louder when my hand is on the gear stick

There is a plastic bush at the base of the gear lever on the original boxes, but I've not heard of them making ticking noises.

If its making ticking noises (again never heard that this is a "thing"), it may well be that the plastic bush/cup is missing or damaged. Or alternatively, an issue with the bushes or pin that holds the stick in place. I'd recommend taking the gaiters off and having a look in there to see what's up.

I've done it to mine, but you'll need to be wary because if you don't know what gearbox you have, it might not fit?

It may not be relevant to the boxes in our cars, but i do remember reading about extra noise from wear if you have your hand on the stick. That slight extra pressure can mean the selector fork is then touching (whatever it touches!) which causes more wear, which then causes the noise. I don't remember what the noise generated was or if it is while in gear or not unfortunately.

If you put pressure on the gear lever it will wear the selector fork and synchro hub. A ticking noise when moving tends to suggest a noise related to the propshaft or speedo drive/cable to me.

Cheers lads - I should have said I don't drive around with my hand on the gear lever all the time...first lesson of drive club when I was 17! But the ticking is there all the time and becomes more pronounced if I apply slight pressure on the gear lever.
