They don’t build ’em like that any more… E10

Decided to get the old Nissan Sunny (N14) back on the road after a year on SORN. It’s used as a second car for short journeys and around town etc. It was only used a few times during 2020 and not at all during 2021.

It is now 28 years old and is very far from mint, but it has been totally reliable over the last 18 years of ownership. I had to replace the alternator about 5 years ago as the bearings were failing, but otherwise it’s been the usual tyres and exhausts, brake pads, and a couple of new callipers. Also has had a couple of patches welded on rear sill corners.

Anyway, I charged up the battery and it started right away, so gave it a wash and hoover and took it for an MOT…

It failed… but only on a split steering rack gaiter plus it needs a new patch welding on the outer sill. That’s now been repaired and I have a years MOT!

I have been driving it about to use up the old fuel which is well over a year old. Decided to stick with 95 ron unleaded even though it is E10. I read that Redex can be added to the tank to prevent E10 issues, so have tried that.

Anyone got any thoughts on this? I had considered just using 97 ron as it's still E5, so can always switch...

Anyway, pretty good considering it has lived outside in the UK the whole time we’ve had it.

PS: Will add some pics soon.

I just wouldn’t worry about it. There’s so much scare mongering going on.

I love the n14’s. One of my fav cars ever was an n15 Almere gti I had.

Think I will give the super unleaded a go at the next fill up, just a tenners worth to see how it runs.

My wife was finding she was being tailgated all the time driving it, think people thought it was a granny car. So, I have added some boy racer decals to it. :EXTRAlol:Seems to be acting as a deterrent I don't have any problems... or maybe it's just the way I drive EXTRA:D

Another year and the 'immortal' Sunny just passed it's MOT today. Two advisories: front sub-frame 'corroded' and number plates, 'but not likely to be misread'. The number plates have been an advisory for years and years, so have ordered up some new ones.

It's amazing how long 90s cars last. I remember in the 80's my brother had a Triumph Dolomite Sprint, which we thought was a really old car at the time. It was rusty and looked like crap, but it was actually probably only 10 years old at max!

924? 924? Go wash your mouth out! 944, pur-lease. Insurance is under £100 - and it uses no oil at all, even with 160,000 miles on it. Belts every four years, usual service stuff and that’s it, so basically nothing …

We had a 2003 S once, the supercharged one, and can vouch for the fact they are great fun.

Haha sorry! I did initially think 944 but then because you said it costs nothing to run I thought it can't be such a big engine 😂

Yeah this is exactly that - 2003 and supercharged. The steering is the best thing - so quick but nice and weighted too.

Mine’s the only-made-for-one-year 2.7 too, and the engine’s the best thing about it. Had it nine years now, paintwork was keyed a few years back and I’ve neglected it a bit lately but it runs like a top still.
